First, need to know what your truck is. Second what type of trailer brake controler are you using? If you have a newer truck you should be able to get a controler and pig tail if you don't already have it, wire the pig tail to the controler, per the instructions with the controler and plug it in. If you have an older truck then your controler instructions should have the instructions to do that as well, if you are thinking that you can just hook a wire to the brake light switch that will not work.

A lot of trucks come with trailering packages. If you have the package then as horse482 said you need a pigtail that simply plugs into your brake controller (after you splice in the four wires) for the trailer and into the plug provided under the dash. I got my pigtail from a Uhaul store. If you have a 6 or 7 pin plug on the back of your truck then you have the package. I use a Prodigy digital controller for a 2 horse gooseneck trailer and it all works great together. Here is a wiring layout in case you need it.

Should have the wire harness in place to connect to in the rear under the bumper, either a dedicated connecter branching off the tailite harness or seperate. When you hook up the existing 2 trailer brake controller wires under the dash you then have current as needed in the harness to the plug/harness for the trailer hook up, these 2 wires under the dash are usually on the l/s of the steering column are and are taped off on the end. They should also be noted in the owners manual.
