I have a diesel engine that is turbo charged. What can I do to modify the diesel engine inorder to save on fuel costs. I have heard of installing chips that can give a 20 percent savings in fuel costs. What are these? Do they work? Is there anything else I can do? thanks

How is that on the engine though. I have read up on that some before but was unsure about them. Besides the vegetable oil what else can I do. Thanks

Technology is moving forward. A repair shop owner friend of mine has converted his 1T turbo'd pickup that tows to burn vegetable oil fuel. The fuel looks like very clear diesel fuel. It is thin like diesel fuel. Incorporated into his shop location is a modern injection service capable of any type electronic control programing. I will ask him more about it this week including any magic computer chip that may improve your truck. What is your year, engine, and what do you use it for?

2006 chevrolet silverado, duramax diesel 6600 v8 ho, 6-speed allison, drw, crew cab, long box, high capacity air cleaner, I'll drive it around montana. I will use it for vacation trips, pulling a horse trailer, hauling large loads of rocks, dirt, sand and all the other stuff like lumber etc.

this is what they say about the chips though

Superchip turners are performance enhancing computer programmers. Simply plug into your vehicle's diagnostic port answer the on screen questions to program your vehicle in 10 minutes! Huge horsepower gains, improved drivability and better gas mileage are some of the benefits from using superchips. User options vary. For a complete list of user options available for your vehicle review the downloads listed below. Diesel applications include 3 power settings. Horsepower numbers listed in the application are the highest level of power available to that vehicle.
Adds Horsepower
Increased drivability, Increase Gas Mileage
Diagnostic Trouble Code Reader (DTC)
Diesel Applications Inclued 3 different power settings.

Basically chips just plug into and reprogram the computer in your car and changes the computer from the factory default settings to a more efficient setting or atleast that is what I hear. Car engine settings these days are all controlled by computers in the old days we had to tighten or loosen a screw.
I read all of that on the internet. I don't know how accurate it all is but that is what it said. The other thing that they said you can do is to increase your intake and exhaust system. I would prefer the chip cause it be so easy. Chips can be somewhat expensive though. The ones I saw are around 450 dollars. But exhaust and intake system upgrades are expensive too. I would like someone with personal or professional experience to give a heads up on this though. You cannot really believe all that you read on the internet expecially from the manufacturers website on there own product......If you know what I mean.

Number 1 - understand that originally - diesel engines were designed to run on vegetable oil (not diesel fuel). Deisel oil only became available later as a convenience and ease of handling and acquisition. Diesel engines will use vegetable oil quite well - as long as it is properly filtered if used oil).

As far as the suggestions about tunner chips. My personal opinion - spend a bit more and have a professional tuner do it. You will get better results and instead of a few options and choices - they can tailor the chip to EXACTLY your driving style and needs. There are two highly respected tuners mentioned on this forum often - Westers in Canada and Nelson in Texas. You can go to their door or they can do everything by mail and self install. You'll pay double the price of a retail chip tuning - but you'll get a much better and more thorough job of it too. Below links to both of their websites.
