Hey, what's up.
My buddy wanted to know a couple questions about the E36s and I can't really tell him much about it since I havn't owned one yet...
The biggest question he has is about the meintance. What I mean by that is, how much are the parts for the M3, if something breaks, will he be able to change it at an affordable cost... Also, if you guys can tell him where the M3 stands in repair costs compared to different car makes.
Sorry if this has been asked before, and thanks in advance for anybody who can answer this for him honestly. Thank you.

m3's can be problematic.
it really depends. i cant just tell you a price of what parts would cost. certain problems would consist of pullies, cooling system, ive noticed an electrical problem here and there with mine. they are beautiful and torquey cars. but the most simple problem can cost you a lot at a shop or especially a dealership. a bmw mechanic wanted to charge me 660 dollars for replacing all of my belts and pulleys. i of course found out i might have to do my own work. which in turn wasnt difficult. i work on all of my cars. but i had bought this car a few weeks prior and didnt want to make a mistake with it. long story short, mechanic wanted 660 dollars, i did it for 150ish. no problems since. im not sure if you are mechanically inclined. its good to start of with a 3 series. they are cheaper, fun to drive. work your way up the latter. make sure to have your buddy, set aside money in case something happens. it can/will get expensive. good luck.

i drive an e36 325i and i work on bmws for a living and from what i've seen if the car has been taken car of well enough there shouldn't be any MAJOR problems under 100k but after that bmw suggest a major service on those cars, which consists of plugs(maybe coils) water pump timing belt, tensions most likely CAT's and just a major check of EVERYTHING. my car has about 155k on it and its in decent condition, i still have yet to to the service but now that taxes are back i've found i have a lot to do, like a head gasket and bushings and mounts all over. so in my opinion its all how well the previous owner took care of the car and i would suggest telling your friend to read over the service history of the car before buying it. especially if the car has over 110k
