car wont start

i have the 99 lumina i was driving it all day and the 3rd time i went to start up the car it wouldnt do anything the lights, radio, and the windows all still work but its something with the sercurity light keep blinking. so i had to jump start the car not get a jump by battery to battery but jump start it from the starter. oh yeah its not the starter either. so how do you think that i can get around this sercurity thing.

If the "SECURITY" lamp flashes while you are attempting to start the engine, the PASSKey system is not recognizing the ignition key resistance. that could be due to failed contacts in the ignition lock cylinder, broken wires, or as little as contamination on the key or in the lock cylinder (NEVER use liquid lubricants in lock cylinders).

Try cleaning the ignition key resistor pellet with alcohol and a cotton swab. Do the same thing to the lock cylinder contacts by carefully inserting a swab soaked in alcohol into the lock cylinder in the same location the resistor pellet would enter it. Allow the alcohol to dry, then insert the key and turn the ignition on, but do not start the engine. Watch the SECURITY lamp when you turn the ignition on. It should illuminate for about four-five seconds, then turn off. If not, you may have other problems with the system.

Short of digging into the wiring, there is no easy way to jumper the system to bypass it. It wouldn't be much of a theft deterrent if there were.

before you go crazy try starting the car in neutral (if auto) or without pushing in the clutch (if manual) if either of those works then its your neutral safety switch.

I dont think they had manuals in any luminas newer that 1994, and even from 1990 to 1994 was a rare treasure.

Might also want to dry a different key alltogether. Or if you dont have one, take the one you have and jiggle it around alot and then try to start the car. This system is actually very easy to bypass if it comes down to that.

You can also try a key relearn if cleaning it doesn't work. Turn the ignition to on (don't attempt to start the car) and leave it for 10 minutes. Turn the car off and leave it off for 10-15 seconds, then attempt to start the car. If the security light doesn't flash, and the car starts, you did it.

Rich, i was unaware that we were able to do a key relearn on the lumina. Its news to me. So im able to order just any old key off ebay, have it cut, and have the car relearned to the key? Will it make it so only the new key works and the old keys dont? And will it work on Pass Key 1 2 and 3 systems?

I don't think the chip key Vats system can be relearned like that, I think it has to be programmed to recognize a non -programmed resistor, or maybe even that is not possible. My 98 would not work this way, I can tell you that for sure. I believe this procedure is only applicable to the transponder type key.

thats what i was thinking, I've heard that the chrysler transponder key can be programmed somehow this way, and thought maybe pass-key 3 might ba able to be, but i was just curious. I dont think they ever had pk3 in a lumina, mine has pk2, and i have a 2001 (last year for the lumina)

no, the key relearn will only work on an existing key that may have started to give you trouble. It cannot be used to make a new key work.
