oil leak

i have a oil leak by the crankshaft dont have time to fixit can i put 30,40w oil to slow down the leak for now,is a 88civic hath.

you said its by the crankshaft..is the oil coming out of the timing belt cover then? if so I doubt anything will slow your leak down...sounds like a cam or crank seal. Once the oil heats up from driving it will leak just as fast as the 5 or 10w30 your supposed to run in the car. Bearing seals are very tough to slow down and get worse and worse really fast cause of the heat and friction from the bearings. Could be a leaky head gasket also.

Sounds like a rear main seal to me...

yeah you didn't mention if the leak was on the tranny side or the pulley side...a friend of mine had his rear seal go..he noticed the leak on monday..by friday his 2 month old clutch was fried..pizza delivery, lol

i have the seal,its coming out time belt cover,i start working this week so il fix it when i get my first check,thank u all for ur opinions,il write back when is fix,also what kind of upgrades u guys recomend for a d15b2 just want all the power i can from it.all i have its a intake n exhaust and is pretty strong.

I have an 89 Civic Si Hatch with 210K that has the same problem... the oil looks like its coming from the timing belt cover. It's leaking at least half a quart a week! Do you think it could be the oil pump seal?

try to check the crankshaft seal because thats whats wrong with mine. if it is that it will cost like 6-7 dollars at auto zone or wherever you go to get the seal. i don't know how much the labor will be if you bring it to a shop for them to put it in tho.

the oil pump is internal btw..if it was leaking the only way you would be able to tell is to test the oil pressure..like the guy above said its likely the crank bearing seal...or cam bearing seal...check your valve cover gasket just to be sure though

To replace that seal your going to have to tear your whole bottom end apart. Have fun.

Just use some cheap thick ass oil, like 20w-50 if you really want to keep running on that motor and if the leak is really that bad. If your only losing like a drop or two each time you park then dont even worry about it, continue with good ol' 30w. If the motor goes out, just swap it out man.
