1/16 SS100 Jaguar - finally finished

Hi - it seems to have taken an age to get this one finished. Here a few shots..........

Historical Note: The SS Jaguars were the creation of William Lyons who founded the company, he also managed it and styled the cars. Lyons was originally a partner in a motorcycle sidecar business called Swallow Sidecars. In 1931 he launched his own SS marque with a series of coupes using Standard's chassis and drivetrains.

In March 1935 the SS90 sports car was introduced. It used a straight six sidevalve Standard engine developing 90bhp from 2664cc - only 23 of these cars were made. In September of that year the car became the SS100 by the fitting of an OHV conversion, developed by tuning expert Harry Westlake, which boosted output to 100bhp. For a further two years the car was only available with this so called '2 1/2' litre but from the Autumn of 1937 until production ceased in 1939 the engine size was increased to 3 1/2 litres which upped the power to 125bhp at 4250rpm. Jaguar Ltd was founded in 1946 and Lyons started developing the XK120 which he introduced at the London Motor Show in 1948 - the rest is history.

Really nice model Martin, but how about some more info on the kit itself. Were the spoked wheels part of the kit or have you scratchbuilt them?

Hi - the Unimat is fine thanks Steven - it's the operator that's not very good!!

John - the wheels are the kit rims and hubs - I built a jig and cut out the spokes and replaced them with wire. I've put an explanation at

in case anyone may want to copy the method.
The kit is probably about 30 years old but goes together as well as you would expect - it just needs refining a bit.
I hollowed out the radiator shell and put in a honeycomb mesh - the stoneguards are from wire sieves from the local supermarket. Brass brads replaced the rivets on the wings - they supported a strengthening plate on the 1:1 car. Door hinges are brass from Dolls House Emporium. The screen was scratchbuilt using the kit side pieces. Dashboard was also scratchbuilt using alloy tubing for the instrument bezels and switch locking rings, the push/pull switches are ground down steel pins; the gauges themselves were scanned from a parts catalogue and are stuck to the back of the glass. The seats were covered in leather and the tonneau made from an old pillow case which was also used to cover the top. That's about it.

Thats a really neat build.Very beautiful.
But does the roof comes off like on real car or you just have to take it off?

Absolutely fantastic, you have great skills and patience to produce such a fine looking model. It looks like the real car! I'm sure that countless hours have gone into this build and it was clearly worth it!
