96 Explorer - Starter Replacement

My neighbor needs help changing the starter on his 96 Explorer. At least I think it needs a new starter - when you try to start it, it makes a hammering noise which you can feel when you are touching the starter.

I've changed out starters in the past but I'm wondering if this job is anything out of the ordinary. Any advice? Thanks!
