Terrible Noise When Starting

I have a 98 jetta that seems to be having all kinds of problems lately. The most recent one is a terrible grinding noise when the car turns over. I came out to my car one day and turned the key when the noise started, it sounds like gears are binding. So I removed the starter looked and didn't see anything put it back in and the noise is still there. Could it be my solenoid?

its the starter itsself, replace the whole thing, its abut 220.00 from a dealer

Nope, Think bendix. It is another part of the starter.Just replace the whole starter.Find an autozone or kragens.Make sure you get a lifetime warranty.:)
