4th gen HB Si

well i might be pickin up a black hb si here in the next week or so cuz a met a guy who's gettin a new car and was just gonna junk it. i dont kno what year it is but looks like either a 90 or 91. the damage is really not that bad tho cuz it doesnt have the usual honda rust but has a messed up back bumper and dents in the body. the odometer says 195k on it and the d16a6 leaks oil. the main thing wrong with this car is the clutch/transmission, you practically have to kick the clutch pedal to get it in and it doesnt pop back out easily. so im gonna give him a couple hundred soon and hopefully have another 4th gen. i was sellin most of d16a6 parts from my old motor but i think im just gonna switch over the tranny and maybe install a new clutch so ill be good to go. its gonna be a good rebuild for me but what do you think i should replace while im changin the tranny? idk what is causing the oil leak but in my old one it was the head gasket so do you guys think i should put some new gaskets in to clear up the leak problem?

Rust? What is rust? I forgot what rust is and how it looks.

still talkin to the guy about the hb and today at work a guy came and offered me his 95 gsr with 121k on it and 1000 bucks for my crx..dont think i want to trade but a newer car would be nice. insurance on it im sure is a pain so i think ill stick with the pocket rocket. but hes workin at the hotel too so if i ever want to trade i can.

what type r parts would work on the b18c1?

Id take the GSR man, the insurance wont be all that different, our crx's show up as sports cars anyway..and the GSR has safety features which we lack, and would be less of a risk to insure...hell, you might even end up paying less. I am looking at integras and I like the idea of a nice interior.

yeah its got the black leather interior with some type r stuff but the drivers seat is torn and some parts are missin like the shift boot, window sill, and rear hatch plastic. ive just spent waaay too much time and money on the crx to consider sellin it. idk im just set on it lol but i guess ive got a lot of thinkin to do

I know what it feels like. You feel with all the time, money, and work you've put into your rex that you just cant stand to sell it and maybe lose a few bucks. If your really unhappy or if you've grown tired of your crx then pick up the GSR. All i can say i your crx is a lot funner and quicker than a GSR and IMO crx's have some pretty damn sexy interior. Oh and dont forget the sentimental value your crx has.

yeah i kno i cant sell it..longest relationship ive ever had lol im not much of a teg person either. it looks nice and newer but ill just rep the 4th gens. i should be gettin the hatchback here in a week tho when the kid moves. cant wait to finally have a backseat.

HB was always better than the rex...didn't you see the poll :dunno:

but i've had 5 4th gens...4 were hb's and have yet to have one more than a year...that kinda sux...but i loved my blue plastic and vinyl interior

and for that oil leak...try a gasket set and see if that works

what type r parts would work on the b18c1?

all of them

They are the same engine with minor refinements and part upgrades.

And Foosh, I know exactly how you feel, I have more time, blood, sweat and late nights in my car than I think I did my last year of High School, I cant let her go that easy. Like today, I just got a new stereo and am 1/2 way through installing a viper 791VX Alarm system. These cars become a spouse of sorts.

yeah I always go through the same thing..see another car or somebody makes me a offer on my crx and I think about selling it..but I always end up keeping it :D I've almost sold it for let's see...a talon tsi..a gsr teg.. a si eg hatch... hmm that's all I can think of now. But Someday when I have time and money (lol) My crx will be easy to add power to and I love the car so much..I'de keep your rex :)

I've had people ask me to buy my car in the strangest places and they are always complete strangers, lol. They aren't the most comfortable on the highway and the damned center console always makes the back of my calf ache. But just like my girlfriend - I sometimes get pissed of and annoyed....but the thought of someone else touching or driving her feels worse, lol

well i picked it up today for 200 bucks. got about 15 miles back and took off from a stoplight and the headgasket blew shiftin into 2nd..my buddy behind me said i shot about a 4 foot flame out the back and i opened up the hood to find a small fire from the oil spraying out. i put out the fire with my hat lol and it didnt roast thru any wires. i knew i was gonna have to change the head gaskets soon but damn why when i just got it lol oh well

im still happy with my purchase tho im ready to learn about internals. ill get you guys some photos tonight after i get back from my parents where its gettin towed to.

theres the only pic i could get of it tonight. its not the best but i got back after dark and then my batteries died. im goin home tomorrow after i get out of court to start rippin apart the head and take more pictures. im gonna end up sellin it probly in the spring or early summer next year. ive got all the parts layin around to fix it so im really spending nothin on the car besides fluids and gaskets. and maybe a few other goodies.

Damn if that thing is as clean as it looks then thats a steal. Is the body straight? Get it running, paint the moldings, sell it and make a crazy profit or keep the mofo.

I value a fourth gen with a straight body and clean shell more than if it runs or not, getting a car to run is a lot easier than fixing dents, accidental damage, and worst of all, rust.

body is straight just a little surface rust and dent right behind the passenger door. just needs some touching up on the exterior with some black paint. i ordered a gasket set last night so it should be here sometime soon but me and my buddy are gonna start rippin it apart today to see if anything got damaged when the head gasket blew. it made a clinking sound when it was in gear but i think its either the synchro or clutch cuz that thing is gone! ive got my old tranny, clutch, and head parts waitin to go on so hopefully itll be runnin here in a few weeks

alright went out to the parents and took some pics, vacuumed a little, and started strippin the head to change the gasket. ill get to washing the outside after i get it running, but ill probly detail the interior on a rainy day or somethin.

before we started surgery, notice the oil on the driverside firewall.
i found out the hatch was made in canada by their stamps. for being canadian there is little rust but the engine bay is really dirty..the previous owner just drove the car till it pretty much died. the engine was bronzed from the oil never being changed and i think the reason it blew was because he just let the oil leak out through the headgasket. i shouldve checked the levels before i drove it home and then i might not have had this problem
http://static.flickr.com/93/253022110_c40ac483a0.jpg

it wasnt the head gasket that blew..it was a rod!! right thru the back of the block..yiikes..good thing ive got my old si shortblock still. now ive gotta rebuild the whole motor mixing and matching parts while adding a few goodies.

two hours later we have almost everything ready to remove the head..hell might as well just pull the motor to get it easier so im grabbin the cherry picker next time im home and breakin it down. all ive got left to loosen is the motor mounts and header. this is going to be a low budget project so ill keep you posted on what im spendin. it just needs a little love and soon itll be ready to go.

Give it some love and it should be good to go. You planning on selling it? So you didnt notice a big ass oil leak when it blew the rod, before you had it towed?

FrodoGT
09-26-2006, 12:53 PM
you would think that when it got towed and tilted upward, youd gush a massive puddle right on the spot.

thefooshmeister
09-26-2006, 02:31 PM
oh no i saw the oil all over the place and drippin on the ground but couldnt see any holes at the time. i thought it just blew and sprayed everywhere but when i was taking off the plastic underbody i saw some small pieces that were bronzed on one side and put 2 and 2 together lol. i had to get to work so i just had the tow truck pick it up and take it to my parents.

im probly gonna sell it in the spring after i rebuild it and fix some of the cosmetics. but ya never know i just might keep it if i get attached to it lol.

alright did some more work today, took the header out, got everything ready to pull it besides takin out the axles cuz i hate the ball joints, and finally broke down my old crx motor to find that i broke a rod in it. the block and everything is fine so when i take the hatch motor out saturday ill see if the crank is still good in it so i can combine the two to make a good one. ive got a lot of the misc brackets and bolts in a degrease bath and some of the pieces look brand new. i picked up some gasket remover and engine paint so i can paint the valve cover and header bronze. so far everythings lookin pretty good but knowing my luck somethins gonna go wrong soon

ill post up pics later ive got a ton of hw to do.

both of my girdles are broken so ive gotta find a new one. gotta buy new main and rod bearings. anyone know of a good place to get them? also was wondering if putting d16a1 rods/pistons in here would give me some more power. also gotta buy some cv boots to replace the torn ones. my garage looks like a warehouse with all these engine parts everywhere.

at one point in time that's how my closet looked...and my hatch at the time..think i rode around for a month with 2 engines in the back b/c i had no place to put them...Godspeed on your project and donate it to me when you finished :D

d16a1 pistons (p29?) will make compression ratio up near 11.0:1... Trust me, you'll like it. You may as well go that route since you pretty much tore the whole engine apart... haha... GL

thefooshmeister
10-10-2006, 08:34 PM
do i just need the pistons or the rods too? with that compression will i have to run premium in it or will it be fine with regular. im glad the heads are both fine, im just totally rebuildin the bottom end, addin some plugs/wires, putting a dc sports adjustable cam, and maybe a short ram intake.

turtlecrxsi
10-11-2006, 08:42 AM
You'll definitely need premium and IMO it'll be well worth it. Just don't do what I did and leave the cam timing advanced 2* for a year and detonate at 80mph then have the car die in a church parking lot and catch fire... LOL

Not sure about the rods. I'm sure somebody on here knows though...

thefooshmeister
10-11-2006, 12:44 PM
yeah i was gonna advance the timing just a tad for a little more pickup, would a set of underdrive pulleys help me out even more? my buddy has one for cheap so im wonderin what the gains will be. im gonna go to the junkyard before the weekend and look for a d16a1 so i can pull the pistons.

this place has been so dead lately..

Advancing the timing on the dizzy is fine. Don't get carried away with the cam timing though... Underdrive pulleys will definitely help. Since you're probably going to replace the main bearings you shouldn't have a problem with it. I ran my pulleys for over 4 years with no issues. Also, think about a lightweight flywheel to balance the other end of the engine. You could probably just resurface the one you have now. I couldn't believe the balance my engine had and the smoothness of the rev through the rpm climb. With the set up I had with toasted rings I could still break traction in third. I miss that sometimes.

thefooshmeister
10-11-2006, 07:36 PM
i was thinkin about the flywheel..how much do machine shops usually charge to get it lightened or resurfaced? im gonna try to have this motor ready within the next two weeks depending on how fast i get my parts and how much free time i have to drive to the parents to work on it.

thefooshmeister
10-15-2006, 11:26 PM
well my buddy has a z6 head that he wants to trade for one of my a6 heads and transmissions. will i just have to run the vtec wires and get a different ecu? i dont kno what ecu would be best to run with an a6 bottom end with z6 head. any help?

turtlecrxsi
10-16-2006, 08:57 AM
You can use a z6 head and it isn't that hard to rewire for vtec in obd0-1 for a p28 ecu. You could do rywire but that seems like a lot of money to redo like 4-5 wires for a plug and play harness.

thefooshmeister
10-16-2006, 01:03 PM
yeah i need to stop bein a pansy about wiring and figure it out. did it right with the crx and just had rywire do all of it but might as well save some $$. it just looks complicated and hard to break down but it really isnt. still gotta re-wrap the stock harness cuz some of it got burned so i can just figure out wiring now and then include it before i do the taping and make it clean and stock.
