97 Grand am sputtering when AC is on

Greetings,
I have a 97 GT with the 3.1L V6. The engine was replaced ~6 months ago and is running great. The problem comes in (seemingly) when I try to run the AC. The car will begin to sputter, and doesn't seem to want to accelerate when given more gas. The condition seems to get worse the longer I leave the AC on, and the car will eventually shut off. As soon as I turn the AC off it begins running smooth again. Any idea what it might be?

There is a good possibility that the compressor is going bad and it is placing too much drag on the engine and causing it to run rough with the AC on. The only other item I can think of is a possible ECM issue that is not increasing the idle when the AC is on. Have it checked by a mechanic or an AC shop to at least get an opinion.
