Hey guys. Yesterday i went for gas. The attendant gave me gas i paid and when he was closing the fuel door(the door that opens 90* to access the cap) i heard a snap. Came out to look and the long thin piece of plastic ( yes plastic) that moves in and out when the latch release next to the drivers seat is pulled, is broken. Now im not talking about the release itself, but the section that actually holds the cap door shut. Now my gas acess door is held in by some metal wire.:banghead: I also noticed a 96 at the gas station as well but his has a complete diff. door assembly. iguess jeep realised this weakness. Question How can i fix this? Would this part still be available or would the newer 96-98 cap doors work. They seem to close in place by the hinge spring only, and has a small finger opening to pull open. Im so mad im calm!

the plastic part is part of the cable .It goes all the way to the handle on the floor inside the jeep.I don't know about changing the whole door but that sounds like a good idea except for having to paint it

thanks, but nothing is wrong with the door. its just the mechamism that holds the door in place thats broken. i hope they still stock that part. anyone with a 96-98 JGC can verify if their gas door has the pull cable or it just flips open with your finger? Maybe i can buy a 96-98 gas door if the honges are the same size etc. and just replace that.

I wanted to add to this post and see if anyone had a solution, my plastic piece that holds the fuel door closed just broke as well, now I have a piece of paper wedged to keep the door closed..
Anyone know of a permanent fix?

Well I called Jeep dealer and they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg, another mechanic said I would need to replace the whole fuel release cable, labor and parts would be around $200
Instead I went to wally world, bought some industrial velcro tabs, works like a charm!
