what could have happened?

well i just discovered something a few minuets ago. i noticed a really airy noise when i was driving today. come to find out, the tube that connects to the (brand new) air filter wasnt even connected. i reconnected it, but im afraid of what could have hapened if i didnt. what could have happened?

nothing. a little dirty air got into the engine. Nothing to worry about.

a lot of racers run there cars without airfilters.

So what's the point of having a filter on the intake? So you don't suck in large amounts of debris and dirt into your intake and engine. For the small amount of time yours was disconnected, next to nothing got sucked in.

If you get alot of dirt or large particles of dirt in the intake it will wear down/score the cylinders after a while. Thats why they are needed.

The racers that run without them dont care because the rebuild/replace their engines several times a season. In the case of drag racers (the big dollar pro divisions) they rebuild after every run down the track.
