My speedometer went haywire on my way home from work, and my trany lurched while downshifting. the check engine light went on and has a code for the speed sensor. Should I reset the sensor and drive it to see if the problem comes back, or should I just switch out the sensor? It did drive normaly after shutting the car off for a little while. I haven't driven it since then. I have not used the cruise control, but can take it for a ride and test it if necesary.

Make sure the speed sensor is plugged in securely and that there isn't a bunch of oil or gunk on the connector. If there is, you'll probably want to fix the source of the oil and clean the connections before replacing the sensor. However, if the wiring looks healthy and the connection is clean and tight, replacing the sensor now before the tranny has issues is probably a wise route to go.
