Engine Light on

I have a1994 Dakota- V8. After driving it very little this summer, it is now starts hard when cold. The engine light is also on. I changed the plugs and wires but didn't help. It seems more like a sensor? When the light comes on, what does it usually indicate?

It can indicate so many things. Take it to a mechanic or someone who has a code reader and have them read the codes.
