Are you sure the gauge is accurate? Usually if it maxes out the car will boil over or push an excessive amount of coolant into the overflow tank.
If this is not happening, you may not actually have a problem, except for a defective gauge or sender. Try installing an aftermarket gauge and see what it reads.

I am having the same problem with my 96. I have changed the thermostat, water pump, heater core I flushed my radiator, replaced almost all of the hoses and still it gets hot. If you find a solution to your problem would you please e-mail me @ [email protected]. I have been fighting this for a while now and I am getting tired of fixing dents I keep putting in my car.

Be sure to get the air out of the cooling system or you will have "hot spots".
There is a coolant refill procedure at the bottom of ... This page. (http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00195.html)

+1-these things are real PITA to 'burp' but it has to have ALL air removed from the system or it will not cool properly-since you have been in the system numerous times, you have undoubtly had to refill it-did you remove the crossover cap and fill the system there after filling at the overflow cap?
