at what rpm does VTEC kick in for my '97 GS-R? i think it's around 5, but i want to know the exact point. also, i've read that the 2001 GS-R VTEC X-over is like around 4, is this true?

As far as I know the Vtec kicks in at about 5000 or 5500 somewhere right in that range.

On the GS-R's the VTEC engagement point is 4400 RPM. If you have a cold air intake, you can hear a noticeable sound difference at this RPM (at wide open throttle).. The engine sound will go from muffled to crystal clear at 4400 rpm.
And, of course, there's the short-runner engagement on the intake manifold at 5700 RPM. :)
