Electrical short causing shifting failures

I have a 92 with about 60,000 miles on it. It has been parked for four years and I am about to bring her back to life. It was parked because it failed smog and because it kept blowing a fuse that caused the turn signals to fail and the transmission to quit shifting. I went throug the wiring and the short seems to be inside the transmission.

Can anyone shed some light on any known problems and how difficult it might be to do my own repair? It is not covered in my Chilton manual. It shifts fine by hand and when the fuse is replaced, but after a few shifts, the fuse blows.

You may have a faulty range switch. Bit suprised about the turn signals - if the reverse light fails when the fuse blows then this would also point to a problem in the range switch. Best advice would be for you to purchase an ATSG transmission service manual - it has details on how to test the range switch for problems and also how to replace if it is faulty.
