Ok, this is my first WIP thread from about 1 year absense from the hobby - so take it easy on me...I am a newbie ;)
I decided to do this one more of a out-of-box project not to make it too complicated for my first model. I started doing the engine and just did basic coloring, no wiring or fine detailing yet - just basic paint.
I actually painted the air intake pleniums with bright red gloss pain, rather then the prototypical cracle dimple flat red finish of any Ferrari - I took an artist liberty with it.

I got the same kit, yet to be built, how's it fitting so far?
slk320
08-29-2006, 10:58 AM
I haven't really done any pre-fitting yet - but the engine appears to fit together just fine. Its Revell, so I expect a little fiddling around with the fit.
Thanks for a warm welcome Oli! As far as the rims, I was going to re-work Revell's kit rims a little, perhaps in dark metallic graphite or black. Like I said, I have been trying to do this one more or less out-of-box build... As I get more comfortable again and as my tools start to get here, I am going to be more interested in starting some super-detailed projects.
I have purchased the following kits and they are on my list to do next:
1. F430 Challenge - full detail/superdetail
2. 575 SuperAmerica
3. 612
4. Mercedes G230 (Oli you inspired me) - as Drakkar rally truck.
This will keep me busy for a while.
Regards,
Paul

Very nice. The paint looks awesome--great shine. I will have this kit in my hands by next week; I plan to paint it--who knows, maybe black. I don't think I'll buy massive quantities of detail accessories like you, but I will maybe look for a P/E sheet--maybe--for sure I will add major detail in the form of wiring and plumbing, and so on. The nice thing about the F430s is that there are tons of pictures--large pictures--available in easy places like Google images. All you need is a good printer  And the engine bay is so clean; you could eat off of it (don't know if I'd want to, though; the spaghetti sauce would mess up the carbon fiber and crinkle-finish red paint  ) That decal sheet that came with it looks nice--more decals on it than the sheet for the Enzo, but half the parts :screwy: Anyway, I'll drool over your thread until I build my own model, then you can visit mine. But right now, it's not about me. Sweet model.

I have not seen the Fujimi one - its on my desk, but just not opened. I will do that one next - so I will post comparo. But so far, the Revell one is very detailed and has really good fit.

What I did to correct the ride height was cut off the pegs and glue the wheel backs directly to the suspension base where the Pegs used to be... I got it sitting like the pic below.... worked for me....

Here's how I lowered my Revell F430 kit (I had fun with Photoshop while I was doing this so call it artistic photos :icon16: )
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/front-01.jpg
I added a piece of strip styrene (0.040 mm) and placed it on the front suspension arm. Once it was dry, I drilled a hole large enough to place the peg of the suspension through.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/front-02.jpg
The bushing area was sanded down until the same diameter of the upper portion of the peg. If I remember correctly, I sanded down about 0.080 of the plastic. That should fall right about the top of the molded in springs on the suspension piece. The smaller peg should be cut by about 0.040 so that it passes through the wheel wells when the pieces come together. Otherwise, that piece will ride too high and cause an interference fit.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/peg.jpg
I modified the pegs for the wheels in a manner that would fit aftermarket wheels. I used the Fujimi F430 Challenge wheels for this kit and to make it fit, I sanded the pegs into a square shape just large enough for the peg to fit into the polycaps. This allows the wheels to fit in well using the same pegs while doing little modification to allow it to work.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/front-03.jpg
Once they all come together, it should fit quite nice. There was a bit of play in mine but I'm not too worried about it. With the little bar that keeps both wheels moving at the same time in place, it works out fine without being too loose.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/rear-02.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/rear-01.jpg
I modified the engine as the suspension piece goes through the engine. I filed down quite a bit of plastic here. I think I sanded down more than 0.100 mm to get the ride height that I wanted. As that part of the engine would not be seen from the engine bay, I had no reservations in butchering that area. I could always fill the lower portion right underneath the suspension to clean it up a bit but no one is going to see it with the wheels and the disks in there anyway. Its really up to you. I'm lazy at this point but I might fill it whenever I decide to finish my kit.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/underneath-01.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/rear-03.jpg
To finish off the rear, I filled in the holes in the chassis to give the pegs something to 'sit' on. Otherwise, the modifications that I did would leave the pegs floating.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/lowered-02.jpg
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/appleseed415/suspension/lowered-01.jpg
Anyway, here's how my kit sits with all the changes.
I hope this helps you somehow. The wheels are from the Fujimi F430 Challenge kit. This should give you an idea that aftermarket wheels would fit. I don't know what size they are though but the tires are for Aoshima 18 inch wheels. Pretty good fit if you ask me.
The gunmetal looks great, BTW!!
