So this afternoon I got some good news. My shop foreman pulled me aside and told me that we were getting way too many SLR's in for service for our one SLR tech to handle. He said he was looking for another tech that fit the criteria. That is: works with patience and has good work quality but also have a passion for cars. He also needed somebody humble enough to take orders from our lead SLR tech and not bitch about it. He said I was the first one that popped in his head. :)

He asked me if I would take the position and of course I said yes. Granted I'm only the "back-up" SLR technician when things get busy or the lead guy needs a helping hand but I'm extremely happy about it. At 24 years old I might the youngest in the country!!! My foreman also said he is trying to get me into SLR training for a week at the Mercedes training center. An entire week in a relaxed atmosphere learning and working on the SLR!!!! :bananasmi

Perhaps I can be the official road test guy...... :naughty:

Yep. I have a pretty good relation with the foreman. He and I have very similar personalities. Probably another reason I was asked. :)

That's nice and all, but what we really need is a Rover 45 technician. Jays beige 45 1.4 has a rattle around the parcel tray and it's disturbing the box of tissues on it.

Congrats. My friend sees a lot VW Pheatons going out to Connetticut and New Jersey because there are only 5 or 6 techs here on the Island, and others in the state are too busy to take them.

Just imagine it in Beige with a tissue box on the parcel tray and Sheepskin seat covers and you'll have Jays 45.

Oh and steel wheels + hubcaps, those alloy wheels are a bit racy y'know dear.

Well, ever since Volvo became a bit too racey and funky, he needed to find something new, he found that the Rover 45 was a nice little car for popping down to the shops into.

John, there are many mods who would tell you never to ask me to hook you up, apparently anybody who asks me that always ends up in a nice restaurant with Moppie...

Tea??? TEA?!??!?!?! That's the gayest damn drink ANYBODY could serve ANYBODY!!!! That's insulting on so many levels!!!! .... :frown: .... :crying:

UPDATE: Since Monday we've had two SLR's in for service. I was real busy this week with other cars but any free time I had I spent with our SLR guy. Did some minor stuff, removing trim panels and learning the torque requirements for the bolts for the undercarriage panelling (over 100 bolts holding it on and NO AIR TOOLS allowed since they all thread into the carbon-fiber body). Drove the two cars but only to park them around the shop, nothing big, no real road tests but I'll take what I can get. :)

Also, the dealership got me in the FINAL class EVER for SLR training. Since production has stopped they don't need anymore techs. I start class on Sept. 25. I'm actually kinda nervous. Usually new car training is like a vacation where you stay in a hotel at night and fuck around with new Mercedes during the day but this is something special. I'll see if I can take some in-facility photos of the cars we learn on. :naughty:

Congratulations on your new job!!! I'm sure it will be a whole experience and a bridge to better things!

And well, once you have this great oportunity to be so close to the real cars, well... some engine and underside photos will be very appreciated!! even when... well, you all know... that scrappy metal chasis on the Tamiya kit...

Congratulations!!

I think we'll have an SLR in the shop tomorrow. My foreman said they were brining one over as I was leaving so it might be there tomorrow. I'll see if I can take some undercarriage and engine pics. :)

Congrats on the Job, if your determined enough, and make enough noise in front of the right people getting onto a F1 team should be possible.
Shit loads of work though :)

All that money and its no better put together than a Lotus Elise!!
I hope that tray dosn't have to come off very often, or it won't take long to ruin the holes. Been there, done that with glass/carbon fibre bodied cars.

Yeah, I kinda figured it's a lot of WHAT you know just as much as it WHO you know. Step one is making a name for myself at this current position with the SLR and then this spring get a start on getting a degree....something in engineering would probably be best.

Deffinitly!
I do know there are guys who get on the teams with out engineering degrees, but they have usualy done something REALLY impressive in front of someone REALLY important.

Have you told your Boss about your desire to work on an F1 Team?
If is a really surportive type he might be able to get in contact with someone in McLaren or MB who can maybe let you know more, about what you need to study, what you need to know etc.
But basicly you need to be a really, really motivated high achiever with a very deep understanding of automotive engineering, and preferably a degree to back it up.

WickedNYCowboy
09-08-2006, 12:08 AM
John A degree in automotive and/or mechanical engineering wouldn't be bad. Also take some Electrical and hydro engineering classes. This is the best you can do for yourself besides being able to turn your wrenches. It's what is inside your head is 9/10ths of what you get paid for turning wrenches is the little 1/10th you have left.
