P0300

I know this has been discussed a gazillion times, but no one seems to have had the same experience I have, or didn't mentioned a solution to a problem similar to mine. Soooo..bare with me.

I have a 97 Rodeo 3.2 A/T. I got all the symptoms that come with the P0300, loss of power, hesitation..the usual. :banghead: Well I scaned with my Actronic and sure enough.. So I reset it and it came right back. So I changed all the plugs, no luck. On to the coils.. In the course of swapping them to isolate which cyclinders are probelmatic I noted all three on the drivers side were not fireing.:screwy:

:nono: Cant imagine all three went out, but hey stranger things have happened. So I swapped with the passenger side and the problem remained on the driver side and did not follow the coils. :banghead: So at this point im guessing ignition control module or ECM.

This is were you all come in. Is there anyone else that has expierenced this and what did you do to fix it.

If all three aren't fireing my guess is your timeing belt has slipped.

what is the history on the timing belt?

Roughly 4 months ago when I got it I cleaned and dipped the heads, had the valves reseated, and replaced both valve cover gaskets. Replaced water pump as well as timing belt.

Thast not a bad idea but I was thinking since 6 cyc dont fire one side of an engine at at time. More like 1&3 then 2&5 then 4&6, or somthing like that, wouldnt it effect both sides and if the timing is off enough for me not to have compression then it would be off enough for valve damage which would result in a no start. If I do a reset after the vehilce as been sitting a while it runs fine for 5-10 mins. Onece the code shows back up so does the problem. Almost as if operating temp plays a part.. Which is what ;led me to believe its electrical.

Could you be thinking the camshaft position sensor, and though its on the same side as my troubles would that not also effect both sides?

Would a bad O2 sensor on that side cause misfires specific to bank 2 (driver's side cylinders 2,4, and 6)?
And the O2 sensor needs to heat up before the ECM relies on it? Just thinking aloud...

I forgot to mention it but I did replace both sides

Did the problem begin immediately after the head work...? Or did it start a couple of months later?

Why were the heads cleaned - blow a headgasket?

If so, wandering if something's still amiss with the head/block.

The head work was done 2 days after I bought it. over 4 months ago. Nothing was wrong, and no, no blown head gasket. I didnt know the history of the vehicle when i bought it, so a strong believer of pre-maintenance I had the time and the tools.

After which she ran like a champ. No problem except for this..

I think I would double check timing and/or maybe even check compression

If it WOKS DON'T FIX IT!

I was just thinking that it would be possible to have one cam timed properly and the other off and it would cause only one bank of cylinders to miss, wouldn't it?

This is were you all come in. Is there anyone else that has expierenced this and what did you do to fix it. no i haven't. but check out this thread. it's a little long and unfocused, but it might click with you -- for him it turned out to be the catalytic converter. check the thread out, let us know if it 'fits'
