Anyone out there tried putting the new hks 280 cams in their 1st or 2nd gen dsm yet? Better or worse then the 272's? If heard the cam sensor needs to be adjusted for them? Was gonna go for the 272's but if i hear better about these i will def go for em- they are the same price! lemme know, thanks

You know to run the 280's you need dual valve springs to deal with the lift duration. Your stock ones will break like immediately on those ones. lol Whereas with the 272's you only need some type of better springs. I do believe that dual valve springs are very expensive but I haven't priced them recently... I would just stick with the 272's with your setup, as they seem to suit it best. :2cents:

Dual springs are very expensive... trust me in building my head now. 272s are good enough for me.

hmm interesting, maybe i will have to rethink that then, but is there anyone that has gone this route and got the dual springs with the 280's?

You won't need dual springs on the 280s. HKS cams all have the same lift, just the duration is changed, which does not affect springs. ;)
That being the case, the main point I try to keep in mind is that duration is all about RPM range. The 280s will probably not make noticeably more power at 7500 rpm than 272s. But if you take the motor to say 8500 rpm, the gains should become more worthwhile. To back up this line of thinking using my own experience, I saw no difference between 264s and 272s shifting at 7500 rpm. More duration moves the peak power up in the RPM band. So a bigger number is not always better, choose the cam that best suits your intended use. At the same time, the low rpm tradeoff is not that significant, so you could also that you might as well do the bigger cams now, so if you upgrade your setup later you don't have to do new cams ;) I hope this non-answer helps :D

im planning on changing to 264 cams(from stock). a few of the ads ive seen on websites offer a set of cams, 264 intake and 272 exhaust. are there 264 exhaust cams out there;and with my setup, which would be better, the 264 intake/272 exhaust or 264 for both? also, im gonna get new injectors too 550's most likely, and try to get boost up to about 19 or so. for these new cams would i need new springs too? and how hard is it to replace the springs? ive never installed cams before and i know nothing about doing it.

Thanks for pointing this out. I had thought I read somewhere that they had a higher lift or something... Guess I was wrong again. *sigh* lol

You at least made me second guess myself, I had to look the specs up again before I put my foot in my mouth :D
The 264/272 combo doesn't make any sense to me. I see no negative side effects to going full 272, so the combo doesn't provide any advantage IMO. And they are all the same price, so I would just do 272 and be done with it. 5 years ago people thought 272s were not streetable, but at the same time, we also thought that 20Gs were "race only." LMAO :D

DSMlink is your answer. Hell you could probably run 292s (if they made them) and have a smooth idle with "link".

The best part about cams is the "blahp blahp" kinda noise. Fuck the extra power, that noise alone is good for atleast 2 tenths :D. I agree with Kevin on the 272's, I think they were engineered together, they should stay that way. Look at it like this. Monkeys=264s, humans=272's, and god (or whatever you choose to believe in)= the engineer of the cams. If they stay within the species they are ok, one is just more (brain) powerful than the other. Now what would happen if a monkey and a human start fuckin? It would yeild some weird shit, weird shit that god didnt want. See what I am saying? Each sepcies (cam duration) is made for each other and if you interbreed the cams, with shit will come out, god will get thrown off, and probably strike your ass with lightning or Michael Jackson or something. Then your stupid ass would get smited. Dont want no smitin man, that shit would suck. Moral of the story: Stay within the confines of you species and make the numbers on your cams match.

LMAO, WTF? :D
FWIW, the idle quality between 264s and 272s did not change on my 2g as far as I could tell. Even the vac was similar IIRC.

well wait a minute with the upgrades i have, and then getting new injectors too, im looking to make like 350hp or so, not too much higher than that because i dont feel like replacing internals just yet. so for around 350hp, would 272s be overkill or would 264s not be enough? and also, would i have to replace the springs too?

It looks as if we are all running 264's, 272's and stockers... I guess getting the 280's would be to go out on a limb, but at least you would be the first one here to run them.

I've heard from two people that went to 280s. One guy with a stroker did HKS 280s and dropped 700 rpm off his spool time. WTF! I didn't believe it at first, but this a very high class DSMer. Another guy with a serious 2 liter (GT45R) and an automatic says he dropped 900 rpm with Brian Crower 280s. I'm personally going to the BC 280s this off season, I've seen enough data to know that it's where I need to go with this car.

Whoa.... how can cams take off spool time? Do all aftermarket cams help with spool time?

I can't say. I'm pretty sure I never saw an appreciable difference. But keep in mind these are big turbos. No one with turbos this size would be running stock cams to switch to say 272s to comapare. I mentioned a GT45r on one car, the other is on a 3575 which is similar to my T67. On 16Gs and other small turbos I don't think the 280s are worth it. Generally, longer duration doesn't pay off until high rpm anyway. Since I go to 8500, and intend to upgrade the turbo this year, I think these are a good choice for me. And I should have no trouble selling the 272s.

Those are some very impressive numbers for the 280s but like you said most people will not be running turbos that large...

i have crower 414s and it is not a smooth idle at all but i like it...with no BS shafts, solid motor mounts ,and cams its not a good "driving home with a hang over car". all tho i designed my car to be all top end, the bigger laggy turbo, the cams that make power around 6k up. its all for the FWD... it does pull pretty hard on the freeway tho...

I have dual 272's and a sroker and it's idles fine. I'm still running my tiny evoIII 16g at this point though. When did they come out with the 280's for dsm's? When i bought my cams they only had the 280's for the evos...
