4X4 default problem

This problem I had before, and wasn't fixed when I had the ignition solenoid replaced...
When I press 4hi, it goes back to 2hi, after 4hi and 4lo lights blink 3-4 times.
If I press 4lo, it goes into 4lo (I hear the front drive engage), but stays in first gear when in Drive.
If I unplug the battery, and re-connect, there is total function, until the first time I park, and turn off the vehicle. Then the problem returns...
There is no SES light.
Got ideas on this?
Thanks!

1st Check vac actuator under battery tray for tears, or leaks, and that the vac hose is connected. Replace if found
2nd Check vac hose leading from vac actuator to vac switch on transfer case for cracks and dry rot. Replace if found.
3rd Check remaining 2 hoses from vac switch on transfer case for dryrot or cracks Replace if found.
If all of the above are fine, disconnect your negative battery cable for 1/2 hour then reconnect it. If your 4x4 works after that you probably have a failing TCCM (Transfer case control module)
If that doesn't solve it, it's most likely the encoder motor

Is there a vacuum routing schematic anywhere to use for diags? Chilton's has absolutely zero on 4WD diags:rolleyes:

You did not give year or transfer case.
But if a 98 and a 233 transfer case it is electric controled.
You can read codes bt grounding pin 13 on your diagnostic connecter and watching shift button flashes.
Post back codes if you can get any.

Jimmy is 98. TC model I've not checked.
Had 5 codes, which went away when ignition solenoid (TSB #?) was replaced. TC still shows same characteristics. No new codes, however.
???
Thanks!

My 97 Jimmy had the same problem. After changing the TCCM, Vac actuator,
Dash switch and Vac switch, I noticed the wiring harness for the encoder motor was touching the driveshaft and severed 3 wires. A little splicing and it is as good as new. By the way the only bad part was the vacuum switch on the transfer case. Hope this helps.
