Are you sure it's black smoke? If its black smoke thats unburnt fuel coming out, which in that case it might just need a good tune up. Blue smoke is burning oil. Are you losing oil? I'd suggest you look deeper into the matter before going out and spending a few hundred for a new engine.
As far as engines go, D series long blocks can be found extremely cheap, check out ebay or your local junkyard for a decent one.

well right now its probably both to tell you the truth... my car does use lots of oil... ill fill it up and less than a week later my oil light is on.. and it doesnt leak any.. but also im getting maybe 20 mpg.. my engine light came on with 2 codes, cylinder 1 misfiring, and fuel to lean... now its been burning the oil since i bought the car, and the light and fuel problem just started maybe a month ago... i figured the oil was burning up with my gas in the combustion chamber... think im wrong? thanks for the help.

Black smoke is from the engine running too rich, running lean doesn't cause smoke. But...losing that much oil like you said is BAD, really bad.
Get a compression test on all 4 cylinders to confirm where the oil is going. If it's leaking past the rings, it's time for a new engine. But if it's leaking past the valves, you might just need to replace the cylinder head then.

well if there was oil getting through the rings into the combustion chamber, woudlnt that make it run to rich? i think that i had bad gas and thats why i had that code, i put some stuff in it and reset everything and only the misfire code comes back up...
