I just bought a 99 Ranger with the 4.0L. A few things..... when I change the gears from Park to drive, or any switch, the transmission sometimes thunks. I am at a complete stop. The fluid is dirty looking. Should a flush fix this? Also, the power steering fluid is brown. Should that be changed? Ah, the evil Ranger engine ping..... if I use 89 octane fuel, will that eliminate the ping and get better gas mileage? How do I clean the MAF? Thanks in advance.

drain the tranny anyways, if it is dirty flush it. and yes change the power steering fluid... im not sure is flushing the tranny is gonna fix that clunk, but it will help it anyways. not sure about the ping either man, good luck

depending on the situation, atleast for me if buying a used car/ truck.. I dont care if the oil looks clean , trans fluid looks clean, dont matter I will change it,in most cases you dont know how it was driven before you. just cheap insurance, for me I will : change oil and filter on trans and motor, new air filter, fuel filter, put a bottle of fuel injector or carb cleaner in the gas tank after you change the fuel filter.check the radiator looks bad flush it and put new antifreeze in. maybe change the rearend oil as well. also depending on the mileage change the spark plugs, wires maybe cap too... all that wont cost more than 150.00 and a good saturday. You will get better gas mileage.

and the clucking could be cased from a dirty transmission filter, try changing the trans fluid and putting a new filter in it.

and if you do all the repairs you might as well check the brakes to see if they need attention as well... look at it this way Most people not everyone but most people trade or sell there vehicle because it needs repairs or its going to need repairs. Lots of cases your going to buy some lazyasses problems.

Thanks for the replies. What is the tranny fluid capacity and I use Mercon V or something like that, right? How simple is it to change the power steering fluid and how do I do it?

you have to drop the trans pan. the fluid wil run out all over the place when you do this. the filter will be right there when you have the pan off. there might be a clip holding it on. im not sure for your year tho. but it will just pull off and you pop the new one back on.
