How to get into car-customizing profession?

I wanna get into customizing cars. I love cars and I love art, and I think customizing cars would be a job that I would enjoy and excel in. I know that Wyotech and U.T.I. have job-placement programs, but is there any way to get into this profession without having to attend a very expensive school (as much as I would love to attend either one)? I feel that I would be good at airbrushing and custom paintjobs, and I feel capable of building custom speaker-boxes, metal-fabrication, body-work, etc. I'm hoping that I can get an apprenticeship at a local custom/restoration shop. Is anyone here in this business? Got any tips/advice?

i went to school at r.i.t.o.p. boston. cost like 5g's tho. now im mobile certified professional. but they dont cover bodywork and paint... thats all i have to offer ya. also, if u commute there, u save like 2500....

If you dont want to attend an expensive school, then I would suggest getting into an apprenticeship at some kind of custom car shop/body shop and go from there. thats just my :2cents:

It's not that I don't want to attend these schools; I'd love that!!! It's just that Wyotech and U.T.I. campuses are located very far from where I live, and it would be very hard for me to afford tuition while paying lodging and living-expenses and still be able to keep my car... and God knows that I will NEVER get rid of my RX-7!

I'm going to UTI, I could use another roommate so I'll pay less rent, lol.
Anyways, I think the best way is just to get to know people who work at shops. With that Rex, it shouldn't be hard to find a few guys who own or work at one. My friend of mine thats going to UTI had a job at bodyshop, and he's only been going to UTI for about a month and a half. He would've had another job at this pretty nice shop but his stupid ass slept past his scheduled interview time. Having "UTI" on your resumse would help you out alot just because they relatively have pretty good pull in the automotive industry, but I think your best bet is get to know some people who already work at a shop.
