:nutkick: Well, I went to the Dr. a couple of days ago and had problems of back pain (which i've had for about 6 months) and red urine. After much poking proding and a piss test I now know I have a bunch of fucking kidney stones. Until about a month ago, I drank nothing but soda, tea and coffee. Now I can only drink water and juice. The best part of the deal is I frequently wake up in the middle of the night with pains in my kidney area so bad I could puke.I've had 5 concussions, stitches 7 times, broken 9 bones and had 1900 pounds of steel drooped on my leg and none of it hurt this bad. There is nothing they can give me for pain because most of that shit is bad for your kidneys anyway so I get to just live with it. The constant dull ache dosen't bother me but The feeling of someone driving a nail through me side fuckin' sucks. And lets not forget the caffene withdrall. Anyone else have any experience with this and can tell me what kind of other fun stuff I can look forward to?:banghead:

I'm curious as to why tea and coffee cause kidney stones. I was wondering why your doctor said not to drink tea or coffee. Tea and coffee are mostly made up of water, whereas I can see how soda can cause kidney stones with all of it's additives. From what I've read, kidney stones are generally caused by excess calcium intake,a diet high in protein and low in fiber, certain medical conditions, and hereditary factors. I do know that oxalate, which is found in tea, can be a factor, but there are other foods higher in oxalate that should be avoided,(chocolate, spinach, and other green leafy vegetables.
Perhaps in the future your doctor might allow you to resume consumption of tea, coffee, and soda, providing you also balance it out with adequate amounts of water, which helps to flush out the kidneys.
The very fact you mention kidney stones and the consumption of those beverages scares me because I mostly drink sun tea, and iced coffee in the summer. My family used to drink soda quite a bit but 2 years ago we made the switch gradually to drinking sun tea, and fruit juices. I try to increase water intake because I know it's good for my body, but sometimes it's hard. Reading your post makes me want to drink more water on a daily basis to head off any potential occurence of kidney stones.

Well tea and coffee have caffein. caffein is a diuretic so it makes you pee more. since he needs to drink alot of water this would be a bad effect. i'm sure that if he could drink enough water he could balance it out. also your doctor should probably have told you to avoid alcohol, it's another diuretic.
can't you get those things smashed with an ultrasound or something? then they just "pass through you" although it also means you have to pee it out, which is HORRIBLE. I've known a few people with kidney stones and i don't want t scare you but they say that peeing them out is the most painful thing they've ever experienced.

My Dr. said that there are two kinds of stones. One is formed from calcium and the other is formed by caffein. The calcium ones are the worst. They form into crystals and are very jagged were the caff. ones are like rocks. And beef_burrito, in my eyes the ultra sound bust-em-up method is the only way to get rid of these things cause they ain't coming near me with that roto-ruter. And I didn't mention alcohol cause I stopped drinking years ago but I had a nurse mention at work that a beer a day can slow down or eleminate the formation of stones so I may start drinking again.:iceslolan UntilI get rid of these bastards I ain't drinking any caffinated drinks so it's water and cranberry juice for me until further notice. I have lost five pounds in the deal though so it ain't all bad.

according to wikipedia cranberry juice is another diuretic so you'll need to drink more water if you drink cranberry juice than if you drank some other kind of juice.

you'll be fine. if you drink enough water you shouldn't have any problems. the problems come when you don't allow your body to flush out crap, so if you drink coffee and other diuretics and don't drink enough water. also some people are just prone to having them, some people will never get em nomatter how bad their diet is. it's all about genetics and lifestyle, it's not going to be one thing that causes you to have kidney stones, it'll be a whole slew of things.

Sorry to go off topic for a moment, but it is kind of related to this thread.
It kills me how these "health groups" come out with reccomendations almost on a weekly basis, and then the following week or month another "study" comes out and debunks the first reccomendation(s). Case in point, for years we've been told to consume at least 8 - 8oz glasses of water a day. And they say "WATER". Now, a few months ago, I read a report and saw it on tv that they still reccomend you get at least 8 glasses of water a day, but now they are saying it doesn't matter how you get it. You could get it from milk, coffee, tea, soda, etc, as long as you also drinksome water during the day. Even one of my doctors said they claim you can also include certain foods you eat when you add up the amount of fluid intake in a day because some foods have such a high water content. It seems that this problem is getting worse as the years go by and it's hard to believe some of the things you read and the studies that they do.

Ok so I go through about half a gallon of skim milk on average, I drink a good amount of water, but not nearly as much as I do milk, maybe a couple glasses a day. Ive done this for years and years but Ive never had problems, Im turning 19 on wednesday, is it possible Ill get these problems? I drink coffee once in a while, maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks but i drink sweet tea when I go out to eat which is usually 3 times a week on average. Thoughts are very much appreciated.

This topic piqued my interest so I did a little more research into it to get a better idea. From what I've read it seems that genetics does play a big role in determining who does and doesn't get kidney stones. I have a friend who gets them occasionally and now that I think about it so does other members of his family. He drinks a lot of water and still gets them. On the other hand , I've seen people around my age (39) and older who drink very little water, and a lot of soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, and don't get any.
My take on the situation is that some of the population may be pre-disposed to getting kidney stones no matter what they drink and how much. Just like certain diseases, and conditions , if it's in your genes, then no matter what, you are at a higher risk. It is good to know if a problem like that is in your family, and if it is, you can take measures to decrease your risk of getting them.

About a month ago I stopped drinking all forms of caffeine and all forms of Soda. I still drink alot of Skim Milk and I drink ALOT of water. Every day I take a Gallon jug of water to work and by lunch I have to refill it cause I already killed. And by the end of the day I've killed close to 2 gallons of water and My wife and I go through about a gallon of milk every other day, and she doesn't really drink it. I've stopped eating after 6pm and I eat breakfast every morning.
And I'm pretty proud of that.

I had a boss that was addicted to caffeine. If he didn’t have some he would get migraines until he puked. I knew another lady that had to stop drinking it because she had a brain aneurism and caffeine increases the blood flow to the brain. She could still have soda, just not caffeine.
There is nothing soda that is good for you. Excessive sugar, carbonation, and caffeine are horrible for you. Hell, the boxes of syrup they deliver to fast food joints have the biohazard symbol on the side.
I have Chron's disease and I know if I drink too much soda I'll have attacks, but I still have one once in a while. Mostly I drink water and occasionally Powerade and juice or Kool Aid.

OZ, the reason I never drank much water is that I can't drink tap water and I was to cheap to buy bottled water. I'm alergic to chlorine and the city I live in puts a shit load in our water. I am now going through a case of 20oz. bottles every two days and nearly a gallon of juice. I haven't drank soda, tea or coffee in three weeks and I don't believe I will go back to drinking them after the stones are gone. After passing one a couple hours ago, I have to say that I have never experienced such intense pain in my life. The pain went away in a couple of seconds but the soreness and the memory will FOREVER REMAIN.

For those of you who give a shit, I have passed the last stone. It was about the size of the eraser on a #2 pencil. The pain of the previous stones were nothing compared to this and I have yet to drink a drop of soda, tea or coffee with caffene. The damn thing was shapped sorta like an egg but looked like the spiked ball on the end of a mace from the mideval era. I would much rather take a kick in the nuts then to ever go through this again.

It dosen't fit!!!!! It's like putting a grape in a straw and after the kidney was fulland blocked, straining hard enough to build the pressure it takes to blow it out. I figured i'd either pass it or blow my johnson apart. Either way the stone was gonna leave and at that moment I didn't care which happened. I just wanted it gone. Thanks for Vicodin, it made the ordeal a little less painfull. But not by much.

Is that just regular soda or does that include diet as well? I know some people who are diabetic and are allowed to drink diet soda. Plus the increased use of Splenda has allowed diabetics to be able to eat more foods that were once "off limits."
Going off topic for a moment. While we're on the subject of sodas. I wanted to post something I saw a couple of months ago while helping a friend clean out a back room at his mother's house. She used the room for 'storage' and he had to paint the room, so he asked me to help him clean it out beforehand. We came across about 4 12 packs of soda that had been there a couple of years. Now the room is unheated during the winter and it appeared that the cans had froze and were bulging and leaking. We emptied them outside and the stuff that came out of them was GROSS. At first it appeared to be clear water, then there was "something else" you could hear rattling in the can. When we flipped the can completely over a wad of dark colored gel flew out. This gel looked like someone had cleared their nose and then spit it out on the sidewalk. I mean it looked a lot like mucous:eek: . Not only that a lot of the soda cans showed signs of corrosion from the soda inside. Makes you wonder what's really in soda:uhoh: . Kind of glad I gave up soda drinking a few years back, and only drink it once in awhile. If you could see the stuff that came out of the cans, I think you might think twice about drinking soda.(Now that I look back I realize I should have documented the occurence with my camera or camcorder to post what the stuff looked like.

Glad you passed that stone. I heard it's a nightmare. My sister had to do it. I bet it's nothing like what a man has to go through though...
I'm diabetic now because I lived off of sodas and cigarettes while in college. I have like one diet soda every other day for the caffeine. I have quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey over 2 years ago. And now I eat more meals more times a day (I used to binge eat one big meal at supper time). I must say that I feel like my health has improved. The one side effect that sucks from taking glucophauge is extreme gas. I've never had this much gas in my life. It comes out of both ends and my stomach rumbles all the time. I feel like Moleculo... the molecular man...
