Swap Transfer Cases 99 JGC

It looks like at some point I am going to have to replace the transfer case on my 1999 4.0 Quadra-Trac II. The chain makes a terrible clunk at times when coasting at hiway speeds. I had the fluid changed to make sure it had the correct fluid and it made no noise for about a 1 1/2 weeks but it's begionning to return. The dealer told me I have a T247.

Is there a better case I could go to or should I stay with the same?

I don't know much about the quad trac II. But ussually when I hear about any case with quadra in front of it, its something bad. The best cases ever put in a jeep are the command and select tracs. You will have to swap it yourself. dealers and most mechanics have a thing about repairing outside of the factory paremeters. I swapped out my original quadra trac for a select trac. a year and a half later and still no regrets.

Generally speaking, what all is involved in the swap?

I wouldn't worry to much about the reliability of the QT-II Transfer Case, The Quadra-Trac I are notorious for the Viscous Coupling going bad, But the Quadra-trac II don't have a VC it uses a gerotor CLutch pump to engage the 4WD.

On the Q-T I cases I guess regular maintenance of the fluid would help extend the life of the VC. I got lucky and mine was replace right before I bought my jeep at aroun 180,??? thousand miles, I bought it with 183,??? thousand miles, and I haven't had a problem with it yet I now have 216K+ miles.

the swap involves exchanging the case, (possibly?!? the input shaft at front of case), adjusting the linkage, changing the selector plate on console and swapping the plugs on back of info center. If you buy a case from junk yard, rebuild it BEFORE you swap it. Not that hard to do.
