Clutch/Transmission Question

Hi my name is Chris and I'm having from problems with my 2000 Mercury Cougar.
I don't really know too much about cars so excuse my ignorance. When I'm shifting gears its shifts hard into gear. It doesn't pop out of gear or anything, it just feels like it doesn't go all the way and its hard to put it into gear. I think thats called hard shifting, im not sure. Also the clutch sometimes is easier to push in than usually, which happens sometimes.
Can anyone tell me whether its the clutch or trans?
