1989 In Dier need of HELP!!!!

Ok I'm stumped, I've got a 1989 with a 22R-E. I don't have any power! I just completed doing a tune-up, new plugs gapped to 0.031, new K&N air filter, cleaned the throttle body, set idle speed at 750 RPM and adjusted the timing to 5 deg. BTDC. I have no check engine light lit except when I jumper the contacts Te1 and E1 at the diagnostic connector when checking the base timing. I need to down shift just to get up to the posted speed. HELP what's wrong, or what did I do wrong.

Did it run ok before tune up? Sounds like you need new wires, cap, rotor. ensure you have the right plugs, check plug wires to see they are not crossed. ie:touching , crossed over on wrong plugs

Yea it ran ok, I did need to change the plugs they were a year old. The plug wires are correct. When I tuned the truck last year, I replaced the rotor, distributor cap, and all wires.

Check your plugs carfully. You may have a cracked insulater or just a bad plug. Its been knowen to happen

Plugs check ok. Gap set correctly. All wires ohm out properly.

When you set the timing, did you jump the terminal wire first? If not, you will WAY retard the timing. That's what it sounds like.

Yes I did jumper contacts Te1 and E1 as per the originial post. The other thing I noticed is, when the truck is first started it does not start in high idle. It starts like it has all ready been warmed up.

Well it looks like I need to replace my timing belt. Does anyone have a good set of instructions to do this job?

Might be a vacuum leak, check all of the hoses and vacuum lines, for loose disconnected, or broken ones. Retrace your steps, double, triple, and quadruple check everything. Also, the 22RE has a timing chain, not a belt. Always start with the easiest/cheapest fixes first, before you move on to the big/expensive jobs that may not solve the problem. Good Luck!

Yes you're correct it is a timing chain. I did all the simple stuff, wasted 2 cans of ether, no vacuum leaks. I played around with the timing advancing it to 27 degs. BTDC and the power came back. Reset timing to specs 5 degs. BTDC and problems returned. Decided to let the local toyota experts look at it and for $35 they told me the timing chain needs replaced. So here I am looking for a good set of instructions. Can this be done without pulling the head?

BTW, to check for yourself if the TC needs replacing, remove the valve cover.
The top of the TC is staring you in the face, pull on it. If it has more than a half inch or so of of play, it may need replacing.

Well since my last post, I've replaced the timing chain, gears, water pump, thermostat, hoses, and belts. I also replaced the throttle position sensor and cleaned the throttle body. Runs good with no leaks. Noticed after running the truck for 20 miles or so, after turning it off and going back in a few moments later, it will not start normally. I must use the gas peddle to get the truck running again. Could this be caused by a bad cold start injector?
