ran into a green lt1 firebird with exhaust and who knows what else, auto. We went from about a 40 roll, to about 80 and we let off. my front bumper was at his back

sitting around thinking about it, it may not have been an lt1, since it was a v-8 firebird, not a t/a. I think the firebird had a smaller 305 engine

in any case, your making me ashamed of the f-bird
anotherwards, good job :D

Just curious...Was it "rounded" like the newer Firebirds? Or was it more "square" like the older ones? I'm guessing it was a 3rd Gen 305...

naw, it was one of the 94+ body style, most definitely, but I'm pretty sure it was between 94-97, did they even have a v-8 firebird after 97 or just the t/a?

well i know for sure if it was a 94+ body style then it wasnt no 305.
if im not mistaken the only vehicle you can get the 305 is in the Vans... or something odd like that.
i dont follow Pontiac as much as i should, so i dont know if i could answer your question correctly. hahah plus im lazy tonight

I'm a former 97 trans am owner. V-8 baby!!! A V-8 f-bird is a T/A ( or a rare Formula). If it was a V-6 then it would be a regular firebird(200hp stock)
There is no such thing as a V-8 bird that is just a regular bird. It is either a T/A or a Formula
The easiest way to tell them apart is from the back. V-8's have a dual exhaust, chrome rims, and tail lights with black lines in them (usually honeycomb or checker board design.) V-6's have a single wimpy exhaust, alloy rims, and regular everyday red taillights.
Some V-8's didn't say "Trans Am" on the middle back plate between the tails. It would just be a regular black plate. Also, if it was a newer version(i.e. 4th gen) it would have a "Ws6" sticker on the back-right under the tail.

eh, saw the car last night, it is a formula, but like a 93 or 94, probably been run real hard a lot. i guess they are only rated at 280, and it was auto, , maybe I should have ran him from the stop, but I didn't want to make an ass of myself doing a burnout on a busy public street.

Any 93-97 V8 F-body is going to be an LT1. Someone posted before that it wasn't a 305, and they're correct. Those were offered in the third generation. Also, a formula would have exhaust with dual circular exits on each side, while a TA would have wide singular exits on both sides.
Regardless of what year, what engine, good job.

I've never heard of an automatic Formula. That to me is just stupid. I mean WTF? It's not a sports car unless it's a manual.
For buying that car that dumbass deserved to get beat. Good Job!!!

Fly Rice Racer shut your mouth you don't know what you're talking about. If that Formula is the 3rd gen style with a 350, then its going to be an automatic from the factory. See that red T/A GTA I posted? They didn't come with the option of a manual transmission. And again thats the best engine they put out for the Firebird and Camaro, the 350. Only 305's came with a 5 speed.
Yeah that style you raced, did it say Formula on the side? Thats a pretty damn good kill didn't those have like 285 hp.

well, racing an Auto takes practice i know you may think its the easy way out. But for anybody who just leaves it in [D]rive when they race i hope they get beat. Thats what the 3(some cars)2 1 or the L2 L1 is for hahah. SHift the mother!
Now with that said, i have to deal with the shifting on the Coloumn ahhhhh!! That takes extra skill... plus people see coloumn shift and think its stock. helps the Sleeper look.:sun:

No need to get pissy. I'm just giving the info that I know. I didn't say that it was impossible to have an auto Formula.
But you have to agree that if what you say is true that it is a stupid idea. Formula's are supposed to be the cream of the crop f-birds just behind SLP Firehawks.
I am standing strong that its not a sports car unless is a manual!!! Anything else is just a cheap imitation.

I would never buy anything that isn't a manual...unless it's an SUV.
But to clarify, when drag-racing from a standstill, GM automatics are faster than their stickshift brethren. From many years of building them, they have programmed their auto trannies to shift faster and at the optimum rpm everytime, which a human shifting can only dream about imitating on a consistent basis.
Fast is fast, manual or automatic...I'm sure you wouldn't call a Tiptronic Turbo Porsche slow or NOT a sportscar.

You sound like a fool...If you knew anything about anything, you'd know that in most cases and auto is the way to go in amature racing. Auto's are MUCH MORE consistent, and with a big enough stall, they launch good and hard. The only real downfall to having an auto instead of a manual is the slightly higher drivetrain losses in power. Other than that, for most amature racers, you'll win more races with an auto than you would with a manual. Once you get the hang of it you'll be able to launch good every time, and you'll never "misshift" seeing as how you don't have to shift...

If I remember correctly, I think TA's are right behind SLP's Firehawks, though the Firehawk can start as either a Formula or a TA. I believe TA's are more highly optioned. Just look at the body panels on a TA to see what I mean. The formula is essentially a V6 body with a V8 in it. It's pretty minimally equipped compared to a WS6-equipped TA.
No flames man, I'm just saying. I know it's hard to outshift an automatic tranny, but where's the fun in driving one? I love my M6.

I can vouch for that being false on occasions. I know from time to time when I'm playing around with gears in the S-10 it doesn't always shift right after I put it into gear. Sometimes I'll try going into 2nd and it will delay for a minor second, then shift into 2nd gear. There are ways to prevent that yeah but just saying, from the factory, an auto is not always going to shift perfectly for you.

maybe an aftermarket shiftkit is in order?
harder, quicker shifts will most likely take care of that problem.
B&M makes a buncha shiftkits shouldnt cost more than $80 for the kit itself, the one for my Turbo 400 (which i need to order ASAP) is $52. But having it installed on your S-10 will be what costs you the most.
what tranny does the S10 come with? 700R4? or is it the 200R4? I know it has to be an Overdrive tranny... at least i think it is!
*Scratches head* well whatever the transmission is, im sure they make a kit for it!

Also SLP Firehawks are the best Firebird in the entire world. Anybody who is anybody knows that the body styling doesn't make a car faster anyways. Its a fully modified (manual)Firebird. You can't beat that!

I don't know redneck I haven't looked into what kind of transmission it has. I know it has overdrive thats about it.
Of course I could use a shiftkit but I was just saying from the factory its not the perfect computer system.
If I had a car like a brand new Trans am or Firehawk yeah there is no doubt I would get a 6 speed in it. As a matter of fact I wanted to get a 5 speed for the S-10 but there weren't any blue colored Xtreme's left at the time. Couldn't wait to buy a 2002, the rebate was going away, didn't have enough money to get them right when they come out. So the only one I ended up finding was an automatic, and it came with the cover and stripes which I was planning to add on, oh well 2 less things to buy later on.
Stick shift can be a pain in the ass sometimes though. I don't completely regret having an auto in the truck.
Firehawks are badass, but you ever seen the Blackbird? 380/90(?) hp Firebird not bad....

Everyone who is anyone knows that Firehawks are badass for an almost straight from the factory vehicle. But if you're gonna go that route, why not get a Mecham TA, or a Berger SS? Modified in the same way as the Firehawks (meaning hoods/wings can be swapped, engine tuning, new exhaust, etc.) and you'll have an even more badass car. Mecham's hood and wings are about the best I've seen on a TA.

Heh actually, does anyone know what GTA stands for? Grand Trans Am? Gold Trans Am? lol I dunno.
Someone had a link I think on the Pontiac Firebird forum to the Blackbird. Pretty sweet looking try looking it up on yahoo.
Its really expensive though like in the 40,000 range. So its a car to look at if your considering a Corvette.

I would have to heavily agree with that satement. I drove a auto plymouth POS for a while while I got money and a week after I learned to drive a stick I bought my car and have enjoyed every minute of it.
I hear a lot of the time that when you get older you just want to stick it in and drive and not worry about it but I'm with fly rice in this one.
I love my stick and I, too made a vow never to go back. Their just more fun! You can't really burn out in an auto.
Although I can see some downsides, like a slow, crappy manual.

can't do a burnout in a auto, hahhahaha, you are sorely mistaken, see what it's like power braking with near 400lb/ft tq at the ground in an auto, you talk about a burnout, I could blow the tires out if I really wanted. when you are putting down any realy power, auto is the way to go, if you are talking hondas or something, slow, then you gotta have a manual, otherwise you get bore in the 10 seconds it takes to et to 60m gotta have something to do, eh
