4g63 vs. 4g64

So I'm looking into buying a stock Spyder GS. I want it to be a later 2g, so a '98 or '99 is my preference. What I'm looking at here is the 2g Spyder GS's come equipped with a 4g64 instead of the 4g63. Now I'm curious if any of you guys have had experience with this engine. Does the block have room for a larger bore and stroke? If this engine has some potential that exceeds the 4g63, I would like to keep it and improve it. If not, should I swap it with a 4g63 from an Eclipse? How about if I have the money for an Evo IX motor -- could I drop that baby in?

Welcome to Automotive Forums.
Please search as this "evo motor swap" has been covered many times before. The 4g63 is the greater of the two motors as it is the motor that comes with the GSX and TSi models. Although some people combine parts of the 4g63 and 4g64 to create stroker motors for in the GSX and TSi models. The GS model would make a nice daily driver for you but will lack the power that the 4g63 is capable of... Most of us here are running around 300hp out of our 4g63's while the 4g64 guys are running around half of that power. Some of us run even more than that once our 4g63's are built...

I would deffinetly try to find a Eclipse GSX or GST, or a Talon TSi. You'll have a lot more fun with any of the 3 above.
If you do a quick search on in these forums you'll find out alot about the engines and what options come with what model. And of course Welcome To AF

Cool, thanks for the advice. I am definitely gonna stick with a Spyder GST then cause I love the 2g convertible. Probably one of the only affordable convertibles I would drive.
//Edit
I should also add then that I do wanna tinker with a DSM some. I want a car that I can truly call my own and have it kill the ricers around here in South Florida. Tons of them around, and on top of that, there's plenty of guys with some domestics that think a stock 4.6 can put down good numbers. And then theres the Euro super cars. Always fun to challenge a Ferrari, Lambo, or Porsche.

speaking as a previous gs owner if you want a cheap convertible go for the GS. The GST's go for a huge premium it seems over the GS (like rediculous difference)...
I had no modifications done to my previous GS and it was always fun to drive. It was faster then my old car and because it's a lighter car it's quite quick. With the longer stroke it seems to have more umph to get up and go. But perhaps that was just a feeling I have and it doesn't really I don't know.
I wish I still had my GS with that I wasn't inclined to spend more money to upgrade it. The GST has so many options so then I want to spend the money. But in reality unless you take your car to the track the extra power is kinda useless (other then bragging rights and it being really fun to work on cars)
So if you just want a car to look nice and drive and that is decently peppy. Go with the GS I assure you, you won't be dissappointed.
If you want speed, blowing by people on the highway and room to tinker go with the GST..
Remember since the GS and GST spyder's are kind of close it's actually really simple to turbo the GS if you would ever want to. I had scooped up all the parts for my old GS before the accident for less then 1000.

correct me if im wrong but cant you put the 4g63 head and exhuast manifold on the 4g64 and it be turbo ready??

You can put a 4g63 head on the 4g64 block, it will in fact bolt right up, making it a DOHC instead of a SOHC, but there's a little more to it than just bolting on a turbo and calling it good. The 4g64 if one of my weaker points, but if you search around on here and dsmtuners.com (even google it) I'm sure you'll find a lot of good info.
Oh yeah, and Welcome to AF.

Welcome! I'm boosting in a GST, and love every minute of it. I'm addicted! its so fast out of the box (stock) once the boost builds up, man it feels like you could out run anything. If i where you i would decide right now what kinda car you want. if you get it the GST, its going to be faster, A LOT more fun to drive, but also cost more! but on the other hand, you get the GS, its more reliable, not as fast, but better on gas, and cheaper... its all about what you want, after all, its going to be YOUR CAR!

Your not going to be able to take any of the euro supercars without a serious turbo and AWD. BUt the ricers won't be a problem!

you think a GST with a 60 trim could do it from a roll?!?!:naughty:

a 60 trim has the capacity to produce enough hp to beat a supercar, but i doubt you'd stay hooked up without some serious tires, but those supercars peel out too plus it all depends on what supercar! Would still be fun to watch@!

4g64.com has a link to turboing the 4g64/63 hybrid and also has the instructions on doing the head swap. It's all under the links section. Enjoy.

i would by the gs, use it as a daily driver and see how you like it, i never had a 2g GS but i did have a 1g gs and i build 160hp from the n/t 4g63 for under $500 bucks, As for the 4g64 block it is the same as the 4g63t other then it makes the 4g63's stroker motors. It is as well capible of handleing boost but you would need to changed the rings and pistons in order to turn up boost real high. try dsmtuners.com or dsmtalk.com or keyword 4g64 swaps on google.com

Yeah I've found some companies that will machine new heads and blocks, so I'll be looking into that. So now the question? If my engine is capable of 20+ boost, what turbo to roll with?

Which motor then? The 4g64?... Its only gonna take that kind of boost if you build all your internals you realize. The stock 4g63 will take well over 20psi with proper tuning... Actually I do believe the stock internals of the 4g63 is good for up to 450hp.
I just believe that its easier and a lot cheaper to mod the 4g63 motors... :2cents:

uhm if you are converting the 4g64.. I'm not sure if you can go that high right away. Something about the transmission. Check 4g64 to be sure but I thought he was running some lower boost setting.... He had reasoning too..
The most popular on here tends to be a big 16g. I'm not sure if it can support that psi though. I know it's good till about 380ish hp though... You can try.. I'd ask around and search in other threads fo rturbos and flow rates. There was a chart around somewhere.
Specifically see these sites:

I'm gonna stick with a 4g63. Hell I'm still deciding if I want a Spyder now or just go with a GSX if I can find one. I saw a local guys 96 GST with a brand new metallic blue paint job and it looks pimp as hell.
Another question if you guys don't mind -- if I'm looking at an engine capable of handling 500-600 horses, what turbo should I run with? Would a 16g be enough? or should I just go with a GT35R? Also, if going with a Garrett turbo, would it bolt on, or is there some custom work to be done? And I know I would need some support mods for this setup. A Walbro 255lph should be enough flow from the tank, but are 550cc injectors enough?

16g is only good for like 350hp I do believe... I'd go straight to the gt35r if your looking at that kinda power. You will need a lot of supporting mods if your gonna do that too. After 450hp you will need to upgrade your internals as well... I think you will need more like 720+ injectors.
