I just bought a 1997 cougar and have only one key...it opens the doors and runs the ignition, but won't open the trunk. should there be another key???

Yeah, there should be another key, but do you need it?
Isn't there a trunk release button in your center console?

I was told by the Ford dealer that they changed to one key in mid 1996??

Did the previous owner change the locks? If you can remove the lock from the trunk, it maybe cheaper to have a locksmith rekey it to match your door locks.

The key should fit everything, unless the lock was changed on the trunk.

I dont remember if my '97 Cougar came with a valet key or not but that's usually what a valet key will do, doors and ignition only. Try it on the glove compartment. if it doesn't work there, then you have the valet key.
