Al - one more time I just wanted to pass along a huge THANKS!! for all these photos. I know the kind of effort it takes just taking them and uploading them, but you deserve a medal for undertaking that on a slow connection. I've only now had the time to finish downloading all of them and it's taken me forever with a fast connection.

It was my first time with a tripod and some didnt come out so well , and i was constantly worried that id get kicked out for being over the barrier, so a little stressed about someone coming along at any moment, but im glad i got away with it!Thanks again for the appreciation, AL

This is the LM prototype, so while the 5 production versions were LM1 through LM5, McLaren called this one XP1 LM. The same identifier is stamped on the chassis plate as well and it is the 'chassis number' if you will.

It also appears on the car's rocker panels just ahead of each rear wheel. XP1 LM signifies eXperimental Prototype 1 Le Mans.

Thank you. I was wondering though if XP1LM are the last five digit/letter of a 13/17 digit vin number.
Peloton, I remember seeing a thread where you explained every single part of the VIN, which contained more than the 4 letters and 1 # cited above.

I've wondered about the VIN on this one in the past as well. After giving it more thought, the last three could be XP1.

Based on the known LM VINs we have there's nothing in the 17-digit sequence that differentiates one from a road car or identifies it as an LM.

However, the year indicator in the 10th position would be an S (1995) for this car instead of the first road car prototype's N (1992) which would also force the check digit in the 9th position to change making each of their VINs unique.

An example of my assumptions for both cars:

Road Car: SA9AB5AC8N1048XP1
LM Proto: SA9AB5AC3S1048XP1

And I thought the LMs had the LM# in the end of the VIN as seen from the Brunei cars: ;)

LM1 = SA9AB5AC9T1048LM1
LM4 = SA9AB5AC4T1048LM4
LM5 = SA9AB5AC6T1048LM5

I think it was the GT's that had similar VINs as the standard road cars, such as the 54GT = SA9AR5BC8T1048054

I could guess the XP1LM has something different from the road cars and other protos, maybe XLM. :dunno:

Right - but those are the chassis numbers for those cars.

My point, which wasn't clearly stated I guess, was that there's no special letter or digit in the Vehicle Descriptor Section (postitions 4-9) of the VINs identfying them as LMs. They match the road cars exactly with the 'AB5AC'. I would think that they'd be different enough to warrant some kind of variance there.

Your XLM theory is another good possibility.

^^^^ Ok, that's more clear (pos. 4-9) and that's the same for all "short tail" road cars, seems that "long tail" GTs have it different at that.
