My 2005 escape hybrid has died 4 times in the past 3 weeks. The service soon indicator comes on, then it starts to lose power, then it is dead. I turn it off, wait a few minutes, start it back up again and everything seems normal, until it dies again. I took it to the dealer, the first time and they said they couldn't find anything wrong and to bring it in the next time with the indicator light on, which doesn't seem possible. Was there a recall on this type of thing?

No recall for that issue. Can you get the check engine light codes that were retrieved from the scanner? Those would really help.
If the CEL was on, then there is a code stored in the system. That dealer you took it to probably did not was to mess with it.

Can I retrieve those codes or do I need to take it to the dealer and suggest it to them? I ran the systems check, but nothing code-like came up. I like the car, but I don't like the unpredictability of the dying stuff, so we may just trade it in.

Some parts stores offer a free scan for codes.

Update: After another trip to the dealer, they test drove it and the hybrid died on them. They hooked it up to their black box, and although the systems check was ok, they replaced the throttle body. So far, it hasn't died since.
