AC blows hot air on 2000 LS

My AC blows very hot air on the passenger side and semi cool on the drivers side. Someone told me it's probably the mixer valve. Any thoughts on what it might be and if it,s this valve how do I get at it. I understand I have to take the dash apart. I can't afford $500-$1000 that the dealer will charge.
