Damp start part 2

Dog house off tonight- I noticed the occasional faint spark around the coil-where it mounts to the bracket- I mean, faint and exactly around the mounting bracket, not the coil wire-
And not often, maybe every 20 to 40 seconds-:screwy: faint yellow, I missed it the last time I checked for arcing. Not dependent on rpm, same time, regardless of revs.

I replaced the coil a couple of years ago in the "parts swap make it run" game.
I recall the installation was drill out the poprivets, use the new .25 bolts/nuts supplied.
It looks like a did some grinding on the metal for a good ground conact, and theres traces of some old dried up grease. Or it could be from the frequent hosing with WD40 trying to get it to start on those wet days

Re-grease? Install dry?- I'm thinking I finally found my damp start problem

You can install it with or without any grease. You need to assure adequare ground. If you are detecting spark leakage from the coil tower, that's a different story.

thanks for the reply- as best I could tell- it was coming from where the new coil meets the old frame (part you dont replace)
I tried doing an ohm test, but dang- couldnt' get ANY reading except test #2, and that was fine- tried sticking staples in the slots, but couldn't get decent contact I guess-
going to replace wires and revisit the coil bracket- remove, drawfile flat- clean bracket to head contact- I think this is the damp start problem I've had for years (as I've replaced a ton of components)
I'll post results after overnight running of hose on engine :rofl:

hosed the whole thing down last night with dog house off, ran water all over the place- last night was cool and high dew point, left hood open. Started right up. Wont know for sure till we get a few days of drizzle and cold (that was the killer) but so far- so good. I routed any wires away from the tranny fluid dipstick tube. Used blue rtv silicone on the bottom of the cap- concentrating on where it meets the module- took apart the electrical connections on the back of the engine, used brake cleaner, cleaned them all up nicely- put dielectric grease on tips- double checked everything.

NO dull spark glow from around the coil bracket, used a thick layer of dielectric grease when remounting, cleaned nuts and bolts- Ran the hose on top of the coil, no stumbles, nothing- I'm thinking this whole time it could well have been problems with the coil mounting surface.
logged for anyone who has damp start headaches that aren't fixed with the easy stuff.
I'll report back in however long if it doesn't start this upcoming wetseason-
