temp gage

My temp gauge on my 1994 GC v8 , goes to almost hot in the red when it is frist started an driven a couple mines, then it goes back to normal an stays there for the entire trip. Would this be the termostate ? the hoses seem fine an the radiator is full of fluid. what gives? thanks for any help
