coolant in oil question

Hi all,
I have a 97 silverado with a 350. 160,000 miles. Truck ran great until recently. I was out on a 10 minute drive and it started to heat up and miss. When I got home, I checked the radiator and it was dry. Unfortunately it was all in my oil pan. I believe my intake manifold gasket gave way.

Anyway, If I fixed the gasket problem, would the engine be o.k. or is it junk now that it has been filled with antifreeze/water? I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

Please let me know what you think.

You didn't have a lot of white smoke coming out the tailpipe? Then you're probably in luck and didn't blow a head gasket (although head gaskets on Chevy V8s are no more, and perhaps less trouble than intake manifold gaskets to change).

If you only drove for five minutes or so, and gently, you probably didn't hurt anything very much, if at all. Immediately drain and save what's in the oil pan for analysis. Are there metal shavings, etc.?

Before tearing into anything, get a diagnosis (or two) from professionals you trust. Then you can proceed with some confidence.

If it is the intake manifold, check the Suburban section for an excellent do-it-yourselfer's guide to changing this gasket.
