Any help in re-programing a key fob for a '99 Malibu? Can it be done without taking it to a dealer? The remote I have is GM factory issue. I just bought a second transmitter so both me and my wife could have one.

Same thing with me. Bought a '99 Malibu LS but the remotes were missing. I now have two new GM replacements but have to take it back to the dealer to program?? On my Silverado PU it was just a sequence of button pushes, 30 seconds tops.

After looking all over the web for the right info, I broke down and finally went to a Chevy dealer.
To program the key fobs, they had to pull some sort of wire harness from along the passenger-side trunk wall and plug a ground wire into the openings. The door locks then cycled (lock/unlock), and I was able to program the fobs by holding down the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for several seconds.
The technicians who helped me do this were good enough not to charge me for the service, mostly because they had never done it before and it took them several attempts to figure out how. All-in-all, I saved about $100 from what I was quoted when I called about buying a new fob from the dealer.:hehehe:

Thanks, it worked perfectly..thought I'd post a lil more detail though :)

This is how I did it..and it worked! Saved $35!
Look in right side wall of trunk..there's a wire taped to another wire that has a plug on it with two prongs. I used my key, yes, my ignition key to jump the plug..I inserted the key between the two prongs and turned so that the key touched both prongs. My car cycled, unlock, lock, trunk release, unlock, lock, trunk release, horn chirp...while keeping the key in place, push (or have someone else do it) the lock and unlock buttons on your remote at the same time for about 12 seconds..you should hear the car lock/unlock. Remove key from plug. Your remote should now be operable. I only had one remote, so if you have more than one, I'd either try repeating the entire process for each remote, or doing each remote one after the other while keeping the key in the plug. I dunno, but if you figure it out, let me know!

PS- my ignition key has a rubber head! Don't electrocute yourself!

My son just lost his fob for our 1998 Malibu.
If I was to buy him a different one, and execute this procedure,
does it reset the code, or simply program the new remote with
the current code? I guess the ultimate question is whether the lost
remote will still work with our car, or does "resetting" the code
render it useless?
Thanks for any insight

The lost one will not work until programmed if you do the other one. If you have two, be sure to do them both. If you program one to it it will render your other one useless. Do all of them.

This worked like a charm on my son's 99 Malibu. The techs at Moran Buick/GMC didn't know any better (or lied to me) and said you need a scan tool to program new remotes and tried to charge me 50 bucks. Don't be fooled! There is a connector taped to the harness on the right side behind the trim (lean in and look up!). It is part of the wiring going to the right rear turn signal/brake light. and is directly to the right of the deck lid but it is taped to the harness and not easy to spot.
We used a key to short the 2 terminals. We then heard the doors lock and horn chirp. We then held 2 buttons on the new remote (refurb unit from keyless-remotes.com) and after about 12 seconds we got the locks cycling and horn chirp. We then held the 2 buttons on the original remote for about 12 seconds and once again got the horn chirp and I then removed the key I had shorting the two pins. We tested both remotes and they worked fine. No $50 sucker fee paid to Moran dealership. I guess I won't be going there for service!
