shattered window

my wife just called me and said her passenger side rear window shattered while she was entering a freeway onramp. I told her to call the police and get a report.
can any of you think of any 'natural' conditions that could cause this? I'm not happy with the thought she was shot at.

I've never heard of anything like that happening without some sort of external influence (rock, bullet, BB, head, etc.)...
That really sucks if she was shot at!
A while back, there was someone here that was shooting out peoples windshields from on top of pedestrian overpasses. And another person chucking big rocks down onto cars too... A couple people were seriously injured, can't remember if anyone died though...

2 things that i can think of but i doubt one of them actually happened. Some kids were probably just out for a good time and had too much fun. I've thrown stuff at cars before but nothing that could actually break anything, it would be just your run of the mill egg or peach.
The other thing that might have happened is that it got too hot in the car and the window shattered from the heat, but i doubt that one.

She just called me back. The CHP officer said it was most likely vandalism, but he wasn't prepared to look for evidence, so she's diving home and the local PD will come look and make a report.'
It's not that hot today, though I know she keeps the a/c on all the time...

Just a thought, but if someone did actually shoot at her, wouldn’t there be a bullet somewhere in the car if it didn’t exit the other side??

Must be scary living in a country where something like happens and the 1st thing you think of is she was shot at.
Over here it wouldn't be an issue, you would assume it was a stone or something flicked off the road, and be glad that it wasn't the frount window that broke, then call the insurance company and glass repiarer when you got home.
Unless you find a bullet in the car I would assume it was a stone flicked off the free way, you would be surperised at how far and how fast a stone can travel when thrown of a truck tyre.

My passenger window in the Shadow broke once from a rock that flew off a truck I was driving by - one lane over on the freeway. I would tend to think a stone hit her either by it getting tossed by an asshole or by another drivers tire.

Be thankful your wife's not hurt! Some others are not as fortunate.
Myself, I have had a rock, about the size of a softball hit my work van windshield while doing 65mph on the freeway. It shattered the windshield but the safety glass did it's job and didn't let the object penetrate the glass. I was able to pull off the freeway okay, (looked like ACE VENTURA, pet detective with my head hanging out the side window trying to keep the van straight and bring it to a stop).

My vote is rock, but I'm first and foremost glad your wife is safe and not hurt. :)
My family once had a big chip taken out of our windshield by a piece of gravel that fell off an un-tarped truck ahead of us... I think we had to have our entire windshield replaced b/c it starred beyond repair.
Let us know what the final verdict is.

Glad the wife's OK. Probably it's just one of those weird things that happens - rock flipped, hits in a weak spot or something.
To Moppie: We don't automatically guess "gunfire" in this country. Matter of fact, in most states and cities one wouldn't even think of the possibility. I don't know if you've ever visited here, but it's a much more diverse and vast country than you probably think. There are so many, many miles and such a vast population that I don't think you can even categorize the entire country at once.

My guess is that, as she moved onto the freeway and as she was moving into her lane, a truck or other car flicked a rock up into the window causing the shatter....
BUT!! Your wife has an Echo, right? i thought the glass on modern cars was designed not to shatter:confused:

oh my gosh dude, that's crazy....I didn't know you have a wife. :D
just playin', I'm glad she's alright and I don't think it was a bullet, maybe there was a hairline crack in the window that you didn't see and it was struck by a pebble, that would cause it to shatter. Assume the best. :)

i dunno if anyone saw that episode of Riply's Believe it Or not when the pizza boy was on the highway and he was delivering his last pizza... and a semi kicked up a metal bar and it went through his windshield and impaled his head and went into the seat...he's alive now though..but that is the kinda odd things that happen..
Thank GOD that didnt happen to jay's wifey. Im guessing it was a rock that flew from the road...or some asshole that was throwing them @ ppl

I'm still having difficulty imagining a rock being kicked up into her rear window... side windows or windshield wouldn't surprise me, but I can't think if a single instance where a car I was driving was hit from behind by anything at all...
Glad she's OK.
