cooling fans

I was just wondering, how would I hook up the cooling fans to run 100% of the time? Also, is this a good idea?

When I got my car, the guy had put 2 fans right between the fmic and the radiator, and then one between the radiator and the engine. well yesterday the fan between the radiator and engine stopped working, resulting in the temp going up when Im stopped. so I was going to remove it and put the 2 other fans in place of it, and have one fan hooked up to run all the time.

You just have to find a constant (+) positive wire and hook it up to another constant wire. I would suggest putting it a switch inline so you have the option to shut it off.

I would leave just leave them setup to come on with the stock relay. But if you really want to, you could tap some wires into the supply and load wires before the relay and run them to your own switch so that you could override the relay if you wanted to.

well if i run a switch, i dont wanna take the risk of forgetting to shut it off when i turn the car off. I could run it to an accessory wire though right, and then it would only work when the car is on? would that mess up anything else? Im not very good at wiring up electronics like this, so i know it sounds dumb.

Well... You can rig up another relay to the switch you install so that if you do forget to shut it off it'll go off when the car does. If you are interested in wanting to do this just shoot me a PM and I'll help ya out with the wiring.

Yeah I would just leave it hooked up the way it is...as far as the fans go though...if there are fans infront of the radiator they are are push fans and the ones on the same side as the motor are pull fans...so that probably wouldnt be a good idea...you will probably need to get a whole new fan...

well the fans in front of the radiator were put there ny the previous owner to pull air through the intercooler. does anyone else do this with their intercooler? I dont think the fans would make a difference if they were between the fmic and the radiator or if they were just between the radiator and the engine.

I guess what it comes down to is that im too lazy to buy a new fan. In that case, how do you test the fan to see if it works? im thinking maybe some wiring went bad somewhere or a splice came undone or something. if i were to take the fan out, could i hook it into a battery and test it? I was looking at the wires yesterday and they both look the same color. any ideaS?


ps - only one fan after the radiator, hmm maybe thats why my ac doesnt work lol.

Take the fans plug and unplug it and stick two wires in the plugs and touch them to each side of a 9 volt battery. If they spin some then the fans are good, if they don't well then you know what that means. :wink:

In regards to the fans between the intercooler and radiator... I have seen this method done before and it works for cooling the charge air an extra bit while the car is at a standstill. Either spot will work just as good.

I'll have a writeup soon on how to wire up an override switch for the fans so that you can turn them on whenever you want. But its also so that the stock sensors still turn them on when they need to.

if the fan is still working, but if i plug it into a battery to test it, is it possible to blow the motor on it somehow by using the wrong plugs on the wrong terminals?

Black wires are usually the ground (-) wires. :wink:

I was looking at the wires yesterday and they both look the same color.

i know black is ground, but both wires are black. no stripes or slashes or any distinguishing marks.

Oh I guess I missed that part... Hmmm guess I need to do some looking on mine then and a little bit of research on the harness.

lol sorry...i guess im starting to be too much of a wuss to really figure out whats wrong, im just talking on the forum lol. I was just asking if it would blow the motor if i touched the wrong ends to the battery?

I don't think it would... I think it would make the fan spin in the opposite direction... But... I cannot say that I've ever tried it. lol It could hurt something I suppose.
