I am the guy that had the alternator that i thought was making the clanking sound on my engine.Well i found out today that its the harmonic balancer. It use to not make the noise when i took the serpentine belt off but now it does.My first question is will driving the car for another week or so do any damage to the engine?I dont have the money now to fix it but i need the car for work. The other question is that i have read on hear that you might not need a puller to get the balancer off of my 1989 park avenue.....3800.Is this correct? One thread on here said that it worked off with a hammer. And is it worth it to get a balancer from a junkyard or just spend the 100 bucks and get a new one? Thanks anyone for any help with this.

Do this asap, get a new one a used one may be on the verge of the same problem, you will need a puller here.

If I recall correctly, the 1989 has a “slip fit” balancer rather than a press fit. It still may be difficult to remove due to rust. In addition, the balancer may not have the three threaded holes in the front for the puller bolts. If not, you might try a large two or 3-jaw puller that will fit over the outside of the balancer to help remove it. Some people use a hammer and a 2X4 or large brass dowel.
