Engine Warning Light

Hey - My wife filled up my 330i the other day and the engine warning light came on the next day. Prior to panicing I checked the gas cap and noted that she had not closed it properly. So I need to know how to turn the warning light off as I am sure tha gas cap being closed improperly was the cause of the light coming on. Can someone tell me how to do that?

PS And yes she will not be allowed to fill up the car with gas anymore!

You can try by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a couple of miniutes (of course then you will need reset OBC and other cockpit functions). If this does not solve the problem a code scanner reset is in order (maybe autozone).

Thanks Bear - Yes I thought of doing that. This is the 3rd time this has happened and I am really reluctant to hoof it over to my local delaership for something so silly.

Can you explain the "code scanner reset"? And what is Autozone - another Forum?

Auto Zone and Advance are parts stores (do not know where you live) and AutoZone does code pulling on OBD cars FREE (if they have the lead for your car). The scanner is a dual part device (the dealer uses one) that allows the technician to read the codes as well as reset the CEL.

Thanks Bear - I get it. Well since I do not have AutoZone (in Canada) nor the device, I may as well try the battery cable thing. You would think that there would be some sort of code clearing sequence that an end-user could perform (IE press odometer button while putting right finger in left ear etc..).

If you could reset without assistance, how would the dealers make any money. What about Canadian Tire, do they offer any service similar to AutoZone?
