How do you know if a fan clutch is bad?

mine is starting to rust all around it, and its making a squeaking sound when the car is running, and doesnt increase when acceleratingg.

Replace it. THey're cheap and it beats having a fan penetrate the radiator.

yeah they are cheap at your local auto parts store, they dont last forever, i would have to say probably at least 33% if all of them on the road right now are worn out due to higher mileage and/or age, or both, is a common occurance to find a worn out clutch fan, most are viscious fluid type some are tempered wound spring type only and some are both, most are both or viscous fluid type only

if there is nor or little resistance in turning the blade set by hand when the engine is hot then its toast, time for new one

they are supposed ot lock in at low RPM and hot, so tat it will cool the fluid in the radiator at those lower speed and hot times

good luck

Do NOT get the "heavy duty" fan clutch. I lost a significant amount of horsepower (84 wagon H-series 305) thinking that bigger was better.

I went back to a standard duty fan clutch and it was like adding 25hp.
