i was driving my 1991 s10 2.5l with 5 speed trans on the freeway in fifth gear and i all of a sudden lost drivability. I was hitting the gas and it was like it was in neutral. I heard nothing, i had full power lights worked. I tried to start and it would sound like it started to catch but would never start? My question to all you pros is : if the clutch went out woulnt you still be able to start the vehicle?? I dont know very much about this type of vehicle. It has 130+ on it and is a beater just want to trouble shoot? My email is batmanb18@hotmail.com. I would appreiate any help.......thanks -Brandon

brandon,
chris here...
did you fix your truck?
if not, think yours is DIS (no distributor)
so if it is cranking but not starting; worst case scenario:
the 2.5 Iron Duke, GM was infamous for putting "nylon" gears in the timing, so these might be shredded, hence engine cranks, but nothing.
it might just be clogged fuel filter/injector, or worn out pump...
a little more feedback would be helpful.

went back to vehicle and still would not start. It will turn but not start. Have not fixed yet.. Is it true that you could still start the car if the clutch goes out?? I lost in 5th gear and felt like no power.....had full lights and power. Just a week ago i changed the plugs. they are gapped right....made a huge difference, drove great after. Now nothing. Should i change the fuel pump?? and filter

Don't change anything before performing some diagnosis. Cetermine if there is any spark, and if there is any fuel.

could be the distributor or fuel filter is clogged, did it just die or did it hesitate first

First things first! Before you start changing parts, check for fuel and spark.
Turn on the key, does the fuel pump hum for a few seconds and stop?Yes? Good, go to spark check. No hum? check f/p fuse. Fuse bad-replace, fuse good-check pump relay. All good and no hum-check for 12v at tank connection. 12v to tank-probably bad pump. No 12v to tank- start back tracking to relay for broken wire or bad ground.
Spark check:Hook up a timing light to a plug wire, any plug wire. Have someone crank over the engine while you work the timing light. Light does not flash-troubleshoot ignition system. Light flashes-you're getting spark, try starting by priming intake with starting fluid or SMALL squirt of gas.Starts on prime-check to see if you are getting voltage pulse to injectors.Got pulse but no fuel-change filter. No voltage pulse- check injector fuse. Fuse good-check sensor that triggers injectors.
Got spark and still won't start on prime-run a compression check to see if timing gears went away.
Clutch has nothing to do with whether or not car will start except for the clutch interupt switch which affects the starter.

I had a similar problem...
my gas gauge said I had 1/8 of a tank left but I was completely out...
I should have figured it out when every time I filled up the needle would disappear out of sight...

check sensor that triggers injectors.........
Im curious where that is, I have a similar no start problem.

Anyone ever figure out what the problem was?
My S-10 did about the same thing.
I was driving down the road, luckily just down the road from my house, and all of sudden if felt like it lost power, and I could not shift gears.
I can't remember if it happened when I shifted or not. It was about three weeks ago.
I pulled over and tried to restart. It was clicking and sounding like it would start, but it just wouldn't start.
My neighbor checked it out, and said the only thing he could think of was the starter.
Any ideas? Does anyone know what was the problem with the thread starters truck?

I think it happened when I was shifting gears and it just felt like it lost power. I think the guages went down and the power steering went out, and it definetly would not shift into gear.
If it was the clutch or starter would this happen?
Alternator?
