Here's what I've done so far: the body has been sanded down to remove lines that shouldn't be there and smooth rough edges. The engine intake on the left side was closed which is a big no-no. Opening it is tricky with the vents and all but I managed to get a good clean job done. Guess how.... :D :D :D

Sand here until the plastic is really thin. You won't be able to break through for some reason, but you can just punch the holes open with your exacto.

Tidy up with thin strips of sandpaper. Resulting job is very clean.

good job on the side intakes! the model looks look sooo much better.... :) I wish I had a dremel tool though... I've heard ppl do this with a dremel + sander tip in less than 30 seconds!!

I wanna dremel too :( :( :(
It costs more than I can afford.

Nice job Daryl, you can try the same with the
louvres in the engine lid ! :)

I just used the very same technique on my RX-7 kit for the 'cowl' vents (for lack of a better description.) Man this kit is molded thick, though! :o

MR2 looks super-hot!!! :D :D :D

looks much better with the vents open. Makes you wonder why the manufacturer didn't mould them open:confused:

using much the same technique as before, I've opened up the left engine vent that feeds the intercooler. The vent on the right is not open on the actual car, so it stays closed. It's quite difficult to sand the ends of the openings from the back, so a length of thread is inserted and the ends are "flossed" until the desired length is reached. Clean up is again by strips of sandpaper. This was really a bitch to do... really tedious work. I'm glad only the left vent need be done.

Addendum: for us here who were sceptical about the 'flossing' method of opening up doors etc... it really works, and you get a really clean, fine cut :) :) ... highly recommended, but have lots of thread handy.

Hi Daryl,

Your 'flossing' kind of things are what makes the difference between a good model and an average one! Very well done.

idea: ;) I would tone down the birght aluminium/silver  colour on the engine a bit with some black/brownish thinned colour in the corners etc. No engine looks so clean, once it has run :D Wiring and hoses are execellente!

I wasn't to sure about the aw11 thing, but the MR2 makes sense

Nice job so far :)

Daryl
09-01-2002, 08:14 PM
Certainly did, Fly :) It's the small details like the hose fasteners that really bring a model to life.

Huudo: I'm kinda going for the show-car engine look. That's why all the tubing is in silver and the engine is colour coded.

Lookin at your model I think I will get one in the future.

Paint is automotive mica blue, wheels are box stock painted flat white and clear coated. Front bumper was cut out and vents made from sheet styrene.

Guido

The mica blue suits the MR2 very well! Keep going on.

NoBrakes
09-24-2002, 02:59 PM
that color suits the model perfectly

when BBCivic has the change he will post his red AW11 with velvet interior

keep the good work

The old-school MR2 is coming along nicely (slowly). Just have to wait for the paint to cure, then a good rubbing and polish. The hose fasteners for the intercooler piping have been relocated since the last time because the engine cover collects them when it slides into place. Grrr...
