Backfire... lots of smoke

Hello guys, I have yet another problem. After my car was tunned I set the boost controller on 12 pounds since I was going easy on the car because of the melted fans. I found new metal once but I will be getting them in 3 days so I must keep the temperature down. I really never floored my car before but now sometimes, its backfiring for one second, looses power, and lots of smoke comes out of the exhaust( i think since I never see where the smoke is coming from). It happens only when I floor it in the upper RPMs. It like stops for one second, backfires loud and lots of white (not sure what color exactly ) smoke comes out. Any ideas of what it can be ? It happens like once a day but its really bothering me. Any suggestions on what it can be ?

most likely a spark issue, (replace plugs and wires)

or a boost leak, check the vfaq for instruction

how old, or what condition, are those ngk spark plugs and wires? My car would do somewhat the same thing. When I'm really rippin on it, it would do 2 or 3 backfires, whcih usually resulted in black smoke. it was very annoying, and so I replaced the plugs and wires with new NGK plugs and wires. Now I havnt REALLY got on it much since the new stuff, but I have been up in rpms and I dont notice any backfire. Ill get on it today and tell you what happens.

ps - after you tune your car you should get new plugs anyways. I dont know how out of whack yours might of been when you got it tuned, but mine was really bad. +40 or +50 fuel levels on the safc hahah. really messed up the injectors. try that and see what happens, maybe get a new set of wires too.

sounds like a fuel issue to me. if your running to rich you will blow black smoke.

I change my plug every 3 week ( that just me ).

Thats a waste of money! Why replace them if you dont have to? I try to get the most life out of my spark plugs. If they foul, I'll still run them on the street for daily driving seeing they wont misfire unless I'm under boost.

thats hilarious lol. on a serious note though, you have to change your plugs more often if you are running higher levels of boost or whatever? just wondering

yea, and if you start putting a shit ton of boost on then you should make the gaps less as well.

I just change 'em every oil change. It's not like we drive 3kgt's where it's a project lol

I boost anywhere from 30-45psi depending on the gas I have in the car at the track. I usually run a .028 gap unless I'm boosting 38-40+ psi then I take it down to .025ish. Whatever boost I'm set at, I run that amount of boost 2nd thru 4th gear with maybe 2-3psi drop between shifts.

With smaller turbos you shouldnt have to worry about that.

I can bomb a set of plugs on a miss shift. Running high boost can cause the spark to blow out but the fuel will still be there and will foul the plugs. Another way to get around it is make sure the open gap on the plug is facing the exhaust side of the head. So when the air comes in it has less of a chance to blow out the spark.

Yeah I guess that is true. I can drive anywhere, including the freeway and not see 1psi of boost. My gas mileage is awesome! :-D

I'm not going to whore up this thread... There is a thread out there with pictures. Dont remember what sub-forum its in but its there. Search 1000hp fuel setup. I'll update that in a little bit.

Back on topic.

It sounds like fuel cut. You have a B16g and no fuel mods what so ever. I'll put my money on it flowing to much air so your hitting fuel cut.

15psi and FP2's on my car and I didnt hit fuel cut... then agian, I kinda blew it up too. Ha ha.

Its a little easier to get away with it in a 1g. The Maf is totally different.

He probably has a boost leak somewhere so the turbo is pulling a lot more air than the engine is seeing. There for since the Maf is before the turbo, it thinks that amount of air is entering the engine instead it is escaping out a boost leak, so you get fuel cut.

check your Air Flow Sensor... just my:2cents:
