Valve cover

Make sure you buy a gasket kit that includes the sparkplug tube seals and grommets. You will need some RTV sealant. FEL-PRO part # VS50517R is the correct FEL-Pro kit for all KA24DE engines.
• Remove 11 nuts from the studs that hold the VC on.
• Use a small screwdriver to pry each washer from the studs without losing any of the special cupped washers. Remove the rubber grommets.
• If the cover is still stuck to the head use a block of wood to bump the end of the VC. If that doesn't work use a flexible putty knife between the cover and the cylinder head to break the seal. Don't pry the cover off. The cover and the cylinder head are soft aluminum and the sealing surfaces are easily damaged by wedging screwdrivers between the cover and cylinder head.
• The instructions in the gasket kit show where to use the RTV. Take time to understand the RTV use instructions before you begin.
• The worst leak is when the oil fills the sparkplug tubes. If the sparkplugs are not tightened to the correct torque, enough compression will leak past the threads and build up pressure until the sparkplug boot blows out of the tube and off of the sparkplug. Over tightening will damage the threads.
• The washers should be straitened and use a small file or the correct size drill to de-burr so the washers slide over the studs without any interference.
• There is a Nissan service bulletin that says to remove the upper timing chain guide (as in throw it away) because it will cause a rattling noise. Nissan did not use the guide on 97up KA24DE engines.
• Tighten the nuts evenly without over tightening so that the washers don't bend. The correct torque is 69-95 in-lbs. The secret to success is clean sealing surfaces and proper use of RTV.
