bypassing the ignition

we have a 94 cavalier thats been sitting for a while. Just wanna use it for around town and stuff but the igntion is messed up. It wont hold in the on position. When you turn the key it will start up but when its released it shuts back off.

Anybody know if it would be possible just to bypass this with a toggle switch of some sort. Basically having it where you flip the toggle and it turns it on then turn the key to fire it up.

If so, can I get some info on how to go about this?

and before anyone says just replace the key/lock That will cost me over $100 and I dont have junkyards here in BFE so I can go find one that way either. I need the car running ASAP but dont have the extra cash at the moment, had to buy books for college :frown: so Im practically broke.

$100 i hope that is taking it somewere, you can do it, just pull the right wires. my best advice would be to pull the wheel yourself and spend the $15 on new tumblers

Can I get new tumblers at an auto parts store? I explained my problem to them and they told me I would have to replace the whole thing key and all because a spring was broken inside.

i mean if it were me and it was just a junk around car then i'd pull the wheel and see what is all wrong, might just need a spring put back in place. then if all is jacked up then you could see what wires are there and could either get an iginition from like a tractor supply or even walmart and just rig it up, or do the switch thing, but it might be wirth checking out first

the whole ignition cylinder is 25 bucks for a delco

you need a steering wheel puller, a lock plate tool, a skinny phillips, a regular phillips, and torx t15, t20, and t25.

if only one torx, you wanna have t20.

i replaced my ignition cylinder, its 300 labor from GM, 80 bucks at a reputable shop, or free + parts if you do it yourself.

should be fairly simple job, i've done it to old chevy trucks about 100 times but never a cavalier

you can probably free rent one from autozone

$16 to rent one from Autozone near me, got all the $ back when I returned it.

yea like a deposit, shit for $16 i would of kept it lol
