Help on a overdue payment and possible suspended license!

You know those letters you just don't see until it's too late. Well that letter for me happened to be my bill from the town coart of eastchester telling me to pay my ticket charge. The fine is ridiculous but the worst part is that the fee was due 8/15 at 10 am. I didn't see the letter until today! I'm freaking out a little bit because the end of the letter says if the payment is not received by the due date, my license will be suspended. Now I'm wondering if a) my license is already suspended b) the court will be understanding when I call and tell them that I didn't see the letter until today c) if it is suspended, will paying the fine be enough to get this whole mess straightened out
Can anyone with experience in these matters please help me?

I'd be putting in an appearance at the court today to pay the fine and make sure your license is intact.
The courts generally have the position that they're not responsible for lost, misdirected, or late mail. What's the postmark on the letter? That may give you some clout if you need it.
But getting down there right away to clean up the bureaucratic mess that this could cause is a good idea.
